OT-OT shop furnace flue size

I'm thinking of installing one of those reznor
waste oil heaters in my farm shop.My chimney is an 8in.x18ft.pipe with a 6in.flue pipe. The stove requires an 8in. pipe, but the heater seller says the 6in would be fine.I wonder why they use the larger flue pipes now? My old furnace has a 6in pipe and works fine on another chimney. 6in. used to be the standard. Will the heater work alright with the smaller flue pipe? Thanks.

What will your shop insurance or the warranty on the heater be worth if you do not install it according to the manufacturer's instructions?

If the material that comes with the furnace says 8" I would not debate the issue, I would use 8".
The man at the store will not write you a guarantee of suitability for the 6" pipe, so don't do it. JimN

Hi Ray,

The most likely out come of installing a different size flue than the mfg recomends, is a cracked heat exchanger, which means you will get CO inside your home and most likely kill your faimily.
