I have 4 single regular light bulb outlets on the ceiling of my shop. Pretty dark. At a reno of our office building I got my hands on a good pile of good used 4' ballast fluorescent lights. I am thinking about how I can use them. Is this something that I can set up 2 or 3 in connection to each socket to increase the boom of the light? I will have electritian help to do this but before I get there I thought I would chek here. Thanks

You should be able to replace the keyless receptacles for you regular light bulbs with standard duplex receptacles. Then use cords to connect your lights so that you can locate them to give even lighting. You may want to think about running a separate circuit for your new lights since they came out of an office and won't have cold weather ballasts in them. Depending on heat in your shop and where you live they may not light very well in cold weather, you may need a few old regular incandescents just to make enough light to walk around.

Most outlets are good for 15 amps. Count the number of bulbs to determine consumption and add a lot of fudge to be safe.

Most florescent bulbs are rated in watts on the bulb 4 footers are usually about 44 watts or so. Two of them would draw a conservative 1 amp. Thus you could put 5 two lamp units on a 15 amp circuit with safety. But! They do not start in cold conditions. So conventional light bulbs may be needed to allow time to warm up the shop and see, as pointed out by Paul.

You got those florescent units because they are junk. Forget about them. Go to an outlet an buy new, cold weather , hi intensity 8 foot units. They come on instantly, are brighter than regular florescents, and are just what you need.
Wire them to be able to turn on different areas. I have 12 of them in my shop. You can get a sunburn in there if you turn them all on at once.
