OT Who owns Caterpiller Co?

Settle an argument here.
I thought Caterpiller was still an American owned company. My friend says no, it was bought out by someone like Komatsu. Is that true?

I think Komatsu bought Laterneau or however you spell it.Maybe that's where your friend's confused.

I've also "heard" that CAT will be dropping their line of truck engines??

Any truth to that??

Yes, at least for the short term. It was/is a strategic move. Urea looks like the only avenue to meet the next emissions level. Cummins has banked many emissions credits and could sell the old engines for a couple of years, and Cat would be left holding the bag to introduce the infrastructure to sell/handle urea. Also few if any would choose a engine that requires urea, if given a choice. It was a lose/lose situation for Cat and a win/win for Cummins. Much better for Cat to concentrate on the off-highway market which continues to literally explode overseas and in reality has always been the bread and butter.

Yes, Cat has 'decided to not supply engines to the OTR market segment' as of 2009 or 10 I believe. There was also a press release around the same time (about 1 month ago) to the effect that they are entering into a partnership with IH that will see cat market it's own line of vocational trucks.
When one considers that Cat is earning as much net income in 3 years as Navistar does gross in 1 year, it's not hard to see that the Cat is playing with the mouse, and those things tend to have an inevitable ending....
I think that vocational trucks will be the first baby step for Cat.
You'll probably see it swallow Navistar within 5 years.

They will invest 1 billion over the next two years to increase production. Sounds better than the big three.
