cranking my 2n.

gentlemen I need some info to help crank my tractor. the people I bought it from gave me a hand crank starter but it doesn't fit the spline on the shaft coming out of the rear of the tranny and differential. the parts man at the local ford dealer just looked at me when I went in to get an adapter for the crank. is there a special name for the adapter or is he just a dummy?

The problem is you not the parts man. If in fact you want to hand crank your tractor your going to the wrong end of it. The hand crank fits in the front not the back

Once you find where the crank goes, search this site for info on how to hand crank an engine without breaking your arm. Never, never, never spin a hand crank like you see on TV, unless you really don't value your thumb, wrist, & elbow.

Keith

PS...the shaft that comes out of the back end is the power take off (PTO) to run attachments.

Look on the front of the tractor, there should be a hole in the lower front of the grill panel. Insert crank here. Turn clockwise, and the engine should turn over.

The splined shaft on the back is the Power Take-Off, or PTO for short. It is NOT used for starting, but for running powered equipment (mowers, spreaders, etc)

Old is right... 2 things you never do on a farm... never try to crank a tractor from the PTO, and never try to milk a bull.

Reminds me of a poem I learned a long time ago:

Oh I'm in the army now,
But once I milked a cow,
I pulled it's tail instead of it's t*t,
and all I got was a bucket of sh*t.

That was in the days of conscription so some will know the era.

Regards, RAB

If you were unaware of where the crank goes, are you aware how it works when it starts???

The crank goes in the front of the tractor. Theres an article on how to crank one
here

99.9% of the time the others are correct on crancking at the front However I did see a 1934 case CI with a vertical type loader which had a removable steering wheel for crancking at the pto. This 1934 case ci also had a starter which was not available on the farm models

You guys are being TOTALLY politically incorrect. In this world of gay rights, a person has every right to decide from which end he wants to crank his tractor.

We got a John Deere A that you crank with the steering wheel. Gotta pry a cover off with a screwdriver and use a stub shaft in the steering wheel.

Some way I can see this guy cranking on the PTO shaft with the 2N in gear and he is running along behind it cranking away.
