Is it just may area or is it every where. The last couple years it seems there are very few farm/estate auctions that have much if any farm equipment. I check the papers every week for them and to find one you have to drive 100 plus miles and then theres very few things that sound worth the trip.

Rich,
I talked to a local auctioneer a month or so ago, he had an auction with a disc I thought I wanted. said it was the first "farm auction" he had for over 6 months. So, your area is not the only area short of farm auctions.

I would think that it is a sign that things are going better on the farm so there are fewer getting out of the business therefore less auctions.

There have been very few 'good' auctions round here the last few years, meaning a total line of good equipment. There was a good full line of hay equipment that sold here 2 weeks ago, every thing went sky high. Most of the farm stuff that has sold round here the last few years has been stuff the grand kids dug out of the barn and woods when gramps clocked out. You do find good deals on smaller older tractors at the consignment sales around here.

You are not alone.

I think in my area it goes in trends. Often has to do with the age of the farmers in my area. In my county the last statistic I saw was 70% of the farms were owned by people 60 years old or older. That means there will be a bunch of sales coming up as those people retire.

Much of it is being sold as scrap metal, not auctioned. Honestly, I've scrapped a lot of my stuff simply because I could get more money for it as scrap metal than as an auction item, and will less hassle to boot.

Small farmers around here leased out to big farmers years ago. Then sold at auction last couple of years. None left any more. No where for and old farmer to go any more------Kenny

Farmers here are more and more consigning their machinery to a localized consignment auction that attracts bidders from a large area. Look at www.wiemanauction.com They have several sales a year and are always well attended.

Around here the machinery dealers and jockeys will come on to your place and buy everything you have as a package deal. All of the small stuff is put on rack wagons and taken to the local consignment auctions. No mess, no fuss. Everything is taken care of without a couple hundred people coming on your farm to make a mess and nose around.

Seems like there are more consignment auctions than there were a few years ago. What I don't like is when the family has carried off the good items to keep or sell elsewhere and all that's left at the auction is worthless junk.
