Soldering Pot Metal

Is it possible to solder pot metal? I have a front MF emblem on my 65 that has a crack across the center. My thought was to apply rosin, then lay the heat to it via a MAPP gas torch. After heated, start pushing in solder. I have leaded solder (electronic) and no lead (for potable water applications). Is either perferrable? Is this even possible? I considered shaving down a plastic one from a different model, but I would like to attempt repair on this first.

Does anyone offer this service?

Aaron

Yes. There is a special rod and flux that is used to weld pot metal. They use a very fine point on the torch flame for control. There used to be an old guy that attended the engine shows around here that sold the torch set, pot metal rod, flux, cast iron rod, and cast iron flux. He would demonstrate the use of both. He welded cast iron with used cast piston rings as well with the flux.
I bought the cast iron rod and flux and use my big torch with the smallest tip. I have wished many times I had bought the pot metal stuff.
Doubt Me If You Want Many Have But

"What does soldering pot metal have to do with JB Weld?"

He was only offering a option of repair. Where is your common sense?

There used to be a fellow at places like farm shows that sold a rod for welding aluninum. With Torch. It was a very low temp melting point. I think he all so said pot metal. It might work. Have no idea where to get it.

Pot metal melts before it glows. Mapp gas is way too hot for getting close to it. Lead and tin based solders won't stick. Pot metal is mostly aluminum and zinc.

If you can't act grown up, go back to the playground. This is not YOUR website, it's KIM'S. If she wants to delete a post, ban someone, or prohibit a topic, SHE'LL do it NOT YOU. Nobody stabbed you in the back, you just made a fool of your own self.

F You!!!!!!!!!! You Ohio Smart ASX!!!!!!!! This is a tractor forum not a political forum. I have been on this forum for 7 or 8 years and I don,t have to listen to you. I don,t care if I get banned but you can go to H double L!!! DH

Looks like in your follow up post to RayP(Mi) 11-7-2003 that you can dish it out but you can't take it. Your reply was and I quote you: We don,t give a damx about the whole state of Michigan. We're from Ohio! Go Bucks!!
RayP was trying to make a point and every body agreed with him but you. DH

Wow, you've been holding a festering grudge since '03 because I posted a tounge-in-cheek line from an OSU fight song?!?! You need some serious medication and anger management!! Dude, you crack me up! A word of advice, When you find yourself in a hole, it's best to stop digging.

I have had pretty good luck with JB Weld on all types of pot metal, etc. Also used it on PVC glued to Aluminum. I did Buy some aluminum welding rods last week, but so far not taken them out of the box.

Good luck,, Gene

Let it go DH. Ive been here since 99, and I can tell you one thing that Ive learned fgorm these people, they are never worng, and when they are, they are still right. I guess its a Northern thing.

"these people"? I've been here quite awhile myself and never dropped an F bomb on someone. Show me where I'm wrong about DH making a fool of himself when all he had to do is skip right over the post with politics in the title. DH over reacted to something that is not his concern in the first place. So he comes back in this thread when I reply to the tractor related topic and uses foul language like a spoiled child. Whatever.

To start with, I wasnt talking to you, I was talking to DH, and this this shows the point I was trying to make to him. Its been my experience that people on this board, once they get fired up about something, wont let it go, and I myself am guilty of that when I feel Im right, or am right about a certain topic. Do I agree with what was said, no I dont. The tone that DH used is not my style, and I was simply trying to calm him down. Im not laying anything on you or him, but I do think a major lack of respect, for lack of a better word, was and is being shown to both parties, as it is with this board at times!

John, it just appeared to me you were referring to me as some sort of troll in your second sentance. I'm not really stirred up about this, I just think it's funny when some people get bent out of shape over some middle of the road OT topic. I of course don't think there should be anything extreme, xxx, or in really poor taste on here and the OT should be kept reasonable. But if someone posts something OT I don't care about, don't know anything about or otherwise doesn't pertain to me, I'll just scroll past. I was just amazed at how fast DH got in an uproar, and, I admit I stirred it just a little. Anyway, that's my view.
