Carburator leak

I have a leak in the carburator at the throttle linkage hookup. Any idea what to do to stop it? It drains the carb so that I have to crank quite a while to get it to fire.

The leak occurs where the throttle linkage moves the valve inside the carb. Maybe an o-ring or something. I will get a picture..

On most tractor carbs, the gas should not rise high enough to run out at the throttle.Could be the float needle sticking. need more info, tractor ,year ,ect

Read Texas Ken again. Unless this is some king of weird carburater. Float valve and it is flooding.

If the float is stuck andn it is flooding, would it still start? It blows tons of black smoke when it coughs and try's to start.. then when it does (throttle full on) the black smoke goes away after a second. After the first start of the day I can shut it off and start it and no smoke all day long.
It is a 1956 Farmall 400.

Wallace,
Sure sounds like the float is sticking,or the needle is worn.
There should be a vent (with some kind of mesh) in the air
intake that should leak excess fuel from flooding,etc.. Try
shuting the fuel off at the sediment bowl and running it until it
quits at the end of the day. REMEMBER to shut off the ignition
after it dies.

You have at least 2 problems with that carb. #1 the throttle shaft seal is bad and needs to be replaced. Its a sort of felt or carbon seal which if bad will cause the carb to suck air and that makes them hard to start. #2 your float is probably sticking or is bad or the needle seat has some dirt in it. Sounds like you need to do a good old carb rebuild no matter what

Should have added if starting gives black smoke you haven't drained the carb you HAVE flooded the engine. If you try the sediment bowl trick you may actually have to choke it to get it to start. Remember to open the valve BEFORE trying to start.

If you have gasoline leaking out at the throttle shaft on a Farmall, you need to fix it right now. If the carb is filling up that much, the gas is also leaking into the crankcase and diluting the engine oil. Either rebuild that carb yourself or have someone do it for you, but do not run that tractor until it is fixed, and then change the oil and filter before you start it up.

Oh goodie.. Thanks! I wll get right on that and will be shutting off the bowl... Always something..

It is the choke valve shaft that the drip is coming from. I looked it up in the shop manual. Where do I get a rebuild kit/rebuilt carb?

Rusty, I meant that I WILL be doing what you suggest. And I really am getting fixed up and in the meantime will be shutting it off at the valve until I can figure out what to do. I meant no slight..
