Safe engine temps?

How hot can you get aluminum cylinder heads before they start to warp?

i.g. If I pointed an infrared thermometer at the heads what should it read?

The answer to the question would be application specific to a certain degree................the head bolt/stud configuration, cylinder head construction, type of engine block(cast VS aluminum) all play a role in the amount of heat a particular cylinder head can tolerate before it cracks....................some can tolerate more than others............

As Lealand mentioned 220 deg. F is tolerable, it seems most of the manufacturers are trying to get the coolant temp. as high as possible in an effort to reduce emissions............
