i need help, i have a 47 farmall m and i have been through alot with it and it seems to start when it wants to. i have been through the carb, replaced points and new battery, replaced the distr. cap, rotor, cleaned the gas tank, new wires , new spark plugs, switched it to 12 volts with an alt., and i am still scratchin my head, new fuel filter. it gets fuel to the carb. any help or ideas where i should go with it would be appreciated. thankyou in advance

If valves are not set correctly, you get hard starting. Also, you mentioned you have fuel to the carb- do you also have good spark?

Check the power switch make sure it's not grounding out. The wire on the side of the dist that comes from the - side of the coil make sure "NOTHING" is causing that to ground out.

This wire must not touch metal at all when it goes in the dist. One strand of wire will cause this problem.

A coil can be weak . Make sure to use a tractor coil. If you use a auto coil a external ballest resister must be used or the coil gets very hot .

Did you take the dist apart exposing the advance plates? The screws that hold that together can't be anylonger then what was in it.

If they have been replaced with longer ones there into the advance plates, things are now bent !

Check the ign switch make sure it's not broke inside. Do it with a meter.

Did you do a compression test in all the cylinders? How much compression do you have? If the compression is fine, check the valve tappet settings. Do you have a magneto or distributor?

Are you running power through a resistor to get down to 6 volts at the coil? If you are then I would suggest putting in a jumper wire to the coil bypassing the resistor only at start up. If you put a diode in the wire it will not backfeed and cut voltage when using the cut down power. I have done this on all of my M"s and it works great. Before I did this they all crank and crank and crank and are very slow to start. Run your wire from the starter terminal to the coil input terminal.
