I am considering a new (to me but still 6 years old) car, an Oldsmobile Intrigue with the 3.5L engine. What do you know about this engine? Any problems with it? How about the vehicle itself? I know they are out of business and no longer made but it would be newer and have fewer miles than the one we are driving now. Can one expect to find parts another 5-8 years down the road? Thanks to all of you wonderful, knowledgeable people out there.

I am not familiar with the Olds Intrigue. It has to be similar to one of the Buicks. I just drove my 2003 Buick Regal to Gulfport Ms. 3,000 mile round trip and it made 30 with the 3.8 engine. Nice ride too.

The Intrigue is a good car.just stay clear of the ones with the 3.5 engine. If the balance shaft bearings fail the engine block junk. GM TSB Engine Lifter Tick Noise - keywords 3.5L assembly balance bearing cylinder drive head intake LX5 mechanical motor oil pressure rattle tick - (Nov 1, 2005)

The following diagnosis might be helpful if the vehicle exhibits the symptom(s) described in this PI.

Condition/Concern:
The 3.5 LX5 engine may exhibit an engine lifter tick type noise. Further diagnosis may reveal no or low oil pressures to the cylinder heads.

Recommendation/Instructions:
Remove the balance shaftvalley cover and inspect the balance shaft bearings for damage. If damaged balance shaft bearings are found, the engine assembly should be replaced as the balance shaft bearings are not serviceable.

Please follow this diagnostic or repair process thoroughly and complete each step. If the condition exhibited is resolved without completing every step, the remaining steps do not need to be performed.

The 3.5L is a basically a caddy motor they call it the Short Star It is a northstar engine. They just cut two cylinders off. It gets 26 - 34 mpg. Lots of power, great handling. I have had mine for 85,000 miles. I also have a 2000 ford Taurus and the Intrigue does everything better. Better mileage better ride better handling and no maintenance. Scotty

My 23 yr old son bought a repo'ed 02 Intrigue a couple years ago with around 75-80K on it. He drives it hard, Now has 95K with no engine problems. The ride is great, I prefer it to any of the vehicles we have. Road mileage is around 32 mpg. His only complaint has been little problems like a windshield wiper motor, power window, etc. I wouldn't be afraid to get one with a 3.5 motor.

I have an 02 Intrigue that I bought new. It has been a great car. Good power, good fuel economy, and a quad cam v6 roar when the happy pedal is pressed. 215HP is more than enough to get this car up and moving. Mine has 90K and is in perfect working order. I did have to replace the SA Pump and valve. Easy fix. Pump ran $137 and the valve another 20. I would definitely buy another if they were still made.

Resale value is down which should work in your favor. Oh and they handle great, too.
