Ferguson clicks but won't start

My Ferguson TO-30 won't start just clicks. The battery is good & tractor ran fine up till yesterday. I saw similar posts and am trying to figure it out. My question is, if its the starter or selenoid can it still be started by way of using a hand crank or by popping it in gear rollin down a hill? Appreciate any & all Info.

Yeah you can pop it in high gear to start it... In fact that's what I've been doing lately with my Case 530 because the bendix drive is stuck and I don't have time to fix it, so I just park it on a hill in low gear. Then when I want to start it I put it in high gear, turn the key on, push the clutch in and after she gets rolling I let the clutch out and she fires up. Remember your in high gear, so push the clutch and brake back in as soon as it starts up.

To me it sounds like your problem is the solenoid, weak battery, or bad connection. You should also be able to start her using jumper cables... connect neg. to the frame and pos. directly to the starter, bypassing the solenoid switch... make sure the key is on your your plugs won't fire. I'm assuming your tractor is 12v neg. ground.

Do you have a solenoid on your TO-30? The OEM system doesn"t have one. It uses a switch actuated by the transmission lever. They sometimes need adjusting or they just go bad due to arcing.
If you have a solenoid and are just getting a click (indicating that the solenod is closing the circuit to the starter),try cleaning the battery terminals and connectors. If that doen"t work, and the solenoid clicks but the starter doesn"t turn, the main contacts in the solenoid are probably arced and need replacement OR the starter is bad. You can check the starter by MAKING SURE THE TRACTOR IS OUT OF GEAR, and connecting a booster cable directly to the starter. If it turns then the problem is in the solenoid.
You can start just about any spark ignition engine with a good ignition system with a crank or by getting it rolling and popping the clutch.

By the way, most of the Ferguson experts can be found in the Harry Ferguson Forum.

check this first.
battery clamps for corrosion, need to be clean.
battery could have gone bad or needs water or could have drained cause alternator gave out.never mind it worked yesterday.
try jumpstart with vehicle or so. positive from veh batt to batt positive on tractor. neg from veh batt to clean bolt or such on tractor[starter mount bolt is fine].
if that won't start the tractor, then try with a screwdriver between the little screw on starter soleniod to batt connection on solenoid.MAKE SURE YOUR TRACTOR IS IN NEUTRAL,VERY VERY IMPORTANT.DO NOT GET RUN OVER BY THE DAMN THING.
if still just clicking, then either solenoid is bad or starter is in need of attention.

If it has a solenoid similar to this its probably the contacts that's been mentioned. Cost was $5.00 plus tax. Hal
