Driving Well Point for water with rim and rope method ?

Can any one direct me to information regarding the
fabrication of a mechanical device that is made up of a power source,
weight and auto rim with a rope that is tightened on the
rim when it is raised and then let loose or slacked off to
facilitate the weight to hit a drive cap on an attached
well point ??? I have seen one of these some years ago and
at present I am interested in driving a point for a little
extra water for the Veggy's. Thanks gents...I know one
of you folks has experienced this in the past and perhaps
can direct me to illlustrations and such.. Thanks JIM

Have you considered a plastic point and washing it in. Way less work and in my opinion work better than the metal ones.

I think this is called a Cat Head. Rope is wrapped around spinning wheel. Rope is pulled taut, rope gains traction on the spinning wheel, weight is lifted, rope is slacked, rope slips, weight falls. Over and over. I bet a tripod, pulley, and a bare wheel mounted on the back of the truck would work. Cannot really think about how this would be done without the possibility of engaging the operator into the spinning mechanism...

Sounds like fun, where do I sign?

I agree with John. I have washed in many hundres of well points over the years when excavating wet land. With a good pump you can drive a well point in a matter of minutes., unless you are sitting on a rock shelf.(BTDT) Henry

That kind of rig is called a capstan on ships. Working boats will have several of them in various places, hydraulically operated, for lifting, pulling, etc. Couple turns of rope, and when you pull the rope, it assists you. Guys get pretty catty at controlling the "bite" of the rope, to slow it up or to let the load down easy. It needs to go pretty slow, so you don't get jerked into it.

When I was in Pakistan, they used a spring pole to hand drill wells. A tripod held a pulley and the rope wrapped around a spring pole (a limber limb) with a paky jumping up and down on the pole.

When I worked on a cable tool rig, the cable ran under a rotating shaft and shiv that would cause the cable tool to lift and drop. Drill for a while and then run in a baler to take out the rock.

If I was going to drill a well, I'd probably rig up a tripod from some tall 4x4s and use a block and tackle to raise and lower a post hole auger. Then cut and thread some pipe to fit my vertical travel. I also have an old Halliburton chixum valve if I wanted to rig up a rotating head to pump water through.

Where can you get some well driving points as well as the points you can pump through?

Wash one in and you'll never even consider driving one again. Also way less work(and probably money too) to build the setup to wash them in.

how do you wash in the well point? i been thinking about putting a well point in for some remote water, i do have a 2" gas driven water pump.

anyone know how to fabricate a CAT HEAD /Windlass/capstan for this type of well point application ? Maybe there is someone who has one or knows exactly how to fab one, perhaps small gas powered horizontal shaft engine designed ? Any ideas on the how to make one of these is appreciated. JIM
