GM truck power steering pump failure

Anyone had the power steering pump fail on their late model GM truck (2000-newer)?
Last year, lady at the barn went to leave and had no power assist in her Suburban. Towed it to the shop and found that the Pump shaft had sheared. Figure it was just one of those things, and put on a new pump...GM said, "never happened before..."
Today, wife calls and says she has no power assist on our 2002 Suburban- she managed to man-handle it home. I got home, pulled on the pulley (even with serp belt still in place) and out comes the shaft!
Any GM Serv Mgrs or techs out there familiar with this? Recall? This is 2 for 2 on Suburbans in our circle of friends- no coincidental failure- and dangerous as hell if it happened on the highway or while towing!

We had the same thing happen on the wifes 2002 Trailblazer. It did put her in the ditch, but no damage was done. The dealer tried to charge us for a new pump since the truck was just out of warranty. That did not happen. When it was all said and done, the dealer made us a sweet deal on a new Durango. Power steering pump shafts do not just break, and GM knows that, but they still won't admit that there is a problem.

I've replaced a handfull at the dealer when I was there.A fair amount in my shop. The shaft breakage seemed to begin in around '98.

No rhyme nor reason why they broke. No recall or even a service bulletin on the problem.

GM says "never happened before"....my a$$!

My ps box was replaced on my 2000 Silverado under warranty. It must have been in 2002.

I haven't had any problems, YET, in my 04 Suburb.

This shaft necks down from about a 1/2" diameter to less than 3/8, and that's where it snaps...no love from GM on it. CarQuest says its their #1 selling pump.

Rat Bastids...

There are a number of chevy service tsb's of steering for 2002 surburbans. TSB #01634 covers replacement of the shaft. If you vehicle had been in the shop their computer system should have shown that this service needed to be done. the NHTSA.GOV web site shows a #3386 safety notice for 2002 surbanbans. You can also go to this web site and request that they investigate the problem with this model.

That's the TSB for the intermediate shaft between the steering box and the steering column. This is the power steering pump shaft- you could actually grab the pulley and pull the broken shaft out of the pump.

cheap materail just to save all the auto makers a buck ,I had an 83 ranger do the same thing it's just greed not quality .

Sorry about wrong TSB but there were so many I think I got cross-eyed looking. BUT you can go to that site a request an investigation of that problem. since it involves a potential loss of control/accident it should be taken seriously. Have anyone you know that has had the same problem do the same. Chevy might be forced to step up to the plate and pay.

2001 chevy silverado at about 40,000 miles. Not a good situation at all. Seems funny I was told about the same as you.

Same failure on my 2002 Suburban at 84500 miles. I made a quick U-turn and then had no power steering. Dealer put in a different pump that doesn't have the speed sensitive steering feature (no computer controlled valve anymore). I hate the lack of road feel and have contacted Chevrolet Customer Service via the internet. I am to receive a telephone call later today. Will post followup.
