Big news here on the edge of Sheridan last week. The old farmhouse on one of the places that I rent is known to be a place to go to buy illegal substances. Well, last week on the noon news came the story that a house on that street was broken in to by a naked man and ransacked. The woman inside baracaded herself in a bedroom and called the cops. They nabbed the guy,but he did a lot of damage. I figured it was the drug house that was broken in to by one of their customers who was looking for some free stuff. NO..it was the dealer who was naked. He broke in to the newer house just down the road belonging to the grandson of the old folks who used to own the farm. I didn't know until Sunday morning which house he'd broken in to. I knew his uncle, who lives just down the road the other way would know. I figured I'd ask him at the coffee shop at breakfast. Here's the kicker..naked guys wife was working as the waitress,so I had to wait til she went in the backroom,to ask him. That's the news from Sheridan. Don't you wish you lived here?

Drugs is a problem everywhere. Both out in the country and in the city. Nothing much scarier than a person on meth, that stuff makes them completely lose their mind to the point they don't care about nothing or if they even live or die.

I'd have asked the waitress myself. I'm pretty direct like that. Now, while I don't hear much about drugs and stuff around here, everybody is related here too. It's the reason that since I don't get out much, I don't date much either.

If you rent the property, are you potentially liable if something happens during a drug transaction? Or is it the owner's responsibility? I'd want to know a lawyer's opinion.

They just nabbed a huge amount of pot plants just south of here. They are saying its the biggest bust ever here in Indiana. Comes as a bit of a surpise to me really, here lately its been nothing but meth labs.

It's either the naked guy or his dad that owns the house. The sister of the guy who was broken into and her husband bought the farm when the grandmother died. They sold the old farmhouse and a couple of acres. I rent the tillable land from them.

You must be in the midwest.I ordered some parts from Kansas and they came wrapped in newspaper.I always read these papers from packaging;"police went to bust a meth lab and while there found another meth lab from a different tenant in the basement of the house.Meanwhile a neighbor complained of a meth lab operating across the street". We dont have that crap in New Jersey unless your an outlaw biker or already in jail. What do I know I dont get out to bars much.

Yep, and then she would have gotten thrown into jail and brought before a jury while some trial lawyor rambles on about what a good upstanding citizen the guy was and the woman is nothing but a murderer for killing him and she should spend the rest of her life in prison. The newspapers would print up every last piece of dirt they could dig up on all sides so the world would know her business. Half of society would call her a murderer for the rest of her life, and the friends and family of the dirtbag she killed is quite apt to keep harassing her.
I see this kind of stuff in the paper all the time and it isn't right. It goes from being a victom once, to being the victom over and over again.

According to the newspaper Meth lab busts are down in SE Indiana since drug stores have been required to put most cold medicines behind the counter and ask for ID from anyone wanting to buy it.

Here in Iowa a few years ago if you rent a house you must have in the contract--do you use drugs? Otherwise the government can own your rental house---seems far fetched to me, but was on the news probably 4-5 years ago. It resembles the bank going broke, and depositers not getting all their money back ...but....If you owe that bank money you must pay it back.

If a auto dealership closes it's doors and your car is in there for repairs---you don't get to drive off till the judge releases it three months later. Same goes for your grain if you store it at a grain elevator---that ain't your corn unless the judge says so. That last one may have been corrected the last few years maybe.

Also like a judge told the United Airway employes---you only get 1/2 of your retirement fund--cause I said so. I wonder if that judge walks down dark streets nowdays.

IANAL (I am not a lawyer), but I'm pretty positive that you do not share the responsibility for your tenants illegal activities. Unless of course you are aware of the activities and turn a blind eye. In that case you may be an accessory to the crime.

My dad used to rent a house to someone who got busted for growing pot. It's not the landlord's responsibility to police his tenants, in fact there are usually laws set up to protect the privacy of renters. For example, you must give them advance warning of when you will be coming into their home.

My dad once rented a farm house to someone who got busted for growing pot. Nothing came from it except that after that, he didn't pay his rent and had to be evicted.
