What type of used hay baler should I buy?

I looking to purchase a used hay baler. I have always purchased my hay (approximately 200 4X4 or 4X5 bales each year. I"m looking for a cheaper alternative than paying someone to bale it for me. How do you know a good used baler when you see it? How much do you have to spend to get something decent? I only want to do my hay. As you can tell, I don"t know much about balers. Thanks for any input.

Personally,I've had Gehls since 1979. Of course you might not have dealers for them near you. That would enter big in my decision if I was shopping for one. I'd stay with the belt type, not rollers or chains. Around here a good Gehl 1450 or 1460,which would be about the size and age you might be looking for would run you $4500-6500. Just check the usual, belts, bearings, chains, sprockets, pickup tines. Any pivot points where things open up.

I appreciate the feed back. Unfortunately about all I know about them is how to spell it. With the size of my operation I don't want to spend a lot of money on this equipment. I have more time than money as the saying goes. However I do want a piece of equipment that will get the job done and not be broke down all the time. I see a lot of used balers on the market but, I don't want to buy someone else's problems. Everything I've read etc seems to point me toward a belted machine. Their also seems to be a concern toward the size of the pickup. Does anyone have any comments on slip-clutch vs shear pin?

Doing your own is not a cheaper alternative. But like so many before you it is something you will have to learn for yourself. If your dead set on doing it find a John Deere 430 that isn't sprung, has decent belts and pickup teeth. This is a simple baler that will produce a good bale and is old enough to be reasonable in cost.($3-5000) It will require approx. a 70hp tractor.($3-10,000 used) You will need a good mower and rake($1-3000 used)or a haybine($1-5000 used. It will also require way more time than you think. When you have time the hay isn't ready or the weather won't cooperate. when the weather and hay are right you won't have the time. My 2 cents
