Need help on Kohler ignition problem.

I have a John Deere 110 garden tractor that I am fixing up for a guy. The starter went bad who knows how long ago (I'd say at least 10yrs judging by the dust on it) He just parked it in the barn and got something different. He gives it to me to fix along with another 112 with a bad rod. Took the starter and solinoid off that one to put on 110 and now it turns over but no spark. Did the usual checking of the points, tried a different plug. Still nothing. I don't know where else to look, it was running till the starter went.... so the coil and condenser should still be good right? I want to get this fixed and out of my shop. Any help of suggestions are appreciated. Thanks. Mike

You might check the plunger that opens and closes the points to make sure it isn't stuck from sitting so long.

You should have a red (hot) wire coming from the selnoid (where the battery cable connects) going back through the key switch. Check to make sure it has not been cut or disconnected.

Mike, I ami no expert, but two suggestions:

1) be sure your ground contact is good, nice and shiny.

2) take a look at the IHCUBCADET website and the forum there. lots of info on hard starting Kohlers and issues. just dont let them know your working on something green! 8>)

Do the points fire when they break with the ignition on? If they do, do you get any fire out of the coil? If you pull the spark plug wire off the plug and crank it over, does the spark jump? These are things you can check rather quickly without too much trouble. Could be a broken wire in the ignition system. rw

Get that condenser tested. I have a bunch of brand new condensers that are no good. Been on the shelf for many years. I don't know why they go bad , but they do.

What is the serial # of the 110?

It could have under-flywheel magneto ignition or "Kettering-type" 12-Volt battery-powered ignition, depending upon the serial #/year.

You can view or download the service manual @ www.kohlerengines.com.

Post back if you need help finding it.

if you got power to the points with key on,and the points are timed and gapped right and in closed position the pushrod has a little play, the condencer and coil are good,al wires are good.check also if the groundstrap is intact and not corroded between the engine and the frame[on right side rear motor mount]find out wether you are getting power to the coil when you are actiually starting.
maybe the ignition switch is the problem all along. i would a also try the coil and condencer of the 112. and put on new set of points. On my 110 i have to change them every spring.
Then it fires on the 2 revolution, choke closed and trottle wide open.

It should still spark with a bad condenser though. I'd be looking at the coil, if you leave the key on, with the points in the right position, you can overheat and kill it.

I just had that happen on my case 530 not to long ago.
