FORD 4000 OIL DIPSTICK TUBE REMOVAL

How do you remove the oil dipstick tube from a Ford 4000 3-cylinder engine? Mine bent 90 degrees when bush hogging. When I straightened it broke about 1/4" above the block but is not broken completely off. I sprayed with PB Blaster and tried to remove with vise grips to no avail.

It's probably brazed/welded into the block. Try cleaning and wire brushing around where it goes into the block and see what you can see.

The best way I have found to remove and install a dipstick tube is to find a piece of shafting that fits the inside of the tube. Then grip the tube and shafting with a pair of Vice-Grips and twist back and forth to remove. To install the new one do the same thing except dtive the tube in by hitting the end of the shafting.

Here's how I remove a lot of broken engine dipstick tubes. This happens more often than you would think.

You need a 5/16 - 18 tap, a piece of 5/16 all thread or a screw with extra threads, a nut to fit the threads, a flat washer, and a 3/8 drive socket that will fit over the old tube.

Coat the tap with grease {to keep metal chips from getting in the crankcase} and thread the inside of the broken tube. Screw in the all-thread and put the socket down over the all-thread. Then you put the washer and nut on and turn the broken tube out. In a lot of cases, getting the old one out is easier than getting the new one in the correct depth without ruining it.
