Cylinder Head Resurfacing

Here's a nifty trick I just thought up to resurface a cylinder head... You will need...

11x8 sheet of glass.
11x8 sheet of emery cloth, 50, 150, and 250 grit.
3M Super 77 Spray Adhesive.

1. Clean the sheet of glass.
2. Spray the sheet of glass with adhesive.
3. Mount the sheet of emery cloth on the sheet of glass.
4. Move cylinder head back and forth until you get a mirror finish... clean off loose grit with air compressor.

This method worked great for the aluminum heads on my Kawasaki powered riding mower.

Nikolas,
Don't rush out and try to patent your new discovery, the instructions for my 1898 hand crank sheep shearing machine recommend emery on glass to flatten the comb and shears to get smooth mating of fixed and movable parts. AND by gluing the emery to the glass you only have a one time use.

Was glass in 1898 smooth enough for that? Also, If you don't glue the emery down it will slide around... and you can't place it on rubber or you will rub the sides down and end up with a convex head. $4 dollars for emery cloth is a hell of a lot cheaper then taking it to a machine shop.

I have a milling machine I could have resurfaced the head with... I got better results using the glass/emery then I would have if I milled it. Plus I saved a lot of time by not having to get it perfectly mounted for fly cutting.

I think if you put the glass/emery on a vibrating plate it would work even better.

been doing that for years with diff compounds for diff things, even lapping injector parts.

done this for years and years on carburator bases to insure a flat match- this eliminates a lot of vacuum leaks and broken ears. Works good with thrmostat housings as well

A head is a pretty big peice to move around on this rig-

I've done it that way too for small single cyl air cooled engines. I used adhesive backed 220 grit sand paper. I don't think it would work on anything bigger though. I the head is really warped, I'll start with 100 grit and finish with the 220. Use a figure 8 pattern.

Yeah, that's why you put the glass on the flattest surface you can find. Really the only reason to use glass is it's very smooth and easy to clean the adhesive off of it.

A block of granite would probably work too.
