O.T., Turkey Talk/Other Livestock

This is the same old debate that has gone on your years.
Cheap hay, make money in cheap cattle
They used to talk about the "hog/corn ratio.
High priced corn, then the price of turkeys has to go up or quit. Thats the way od the world.
All I can say is that having every thing cheap is not good. Course this energy thing is way over--or is it? realy compaied to other things? Four dollars and a half for a hamburger- unless they have gone up since I bought one. I sure don"t want one made from turkey.

30 million pounds of turkey a year at 8 locations and employs 28 people, maybe he should by a section and grow corn to supplement his feed.we have an egg farm near us, big operation. they farm close to 2000 acres, use some of the grain for feed and sell the rest.

To blame congress for his 'problem' with ethanol is stupid. Currently makes good press, but feed grain demand is much more than from ethanol use. Reduced world-wide production is a much bigger factor, along with increased demand from developing nations. When we sold corn for under 2 bucks for many years- those turkey 'farmers' didn't complain about cheap corn, any more than the hog farmers did. He calls himself a farmer but doesn't raise any crops. Ignorant public thinks ethanol uses up corn, but doesn't realize that the residue is an excellent feed for bovines, and can be utilized on a limited basis for single-stomach animals like poultry and hogs.

Well thats what propaganda gets done.He needs to grow his own corn, you cant count on any price staying the same, but to blame ethanol for his problem is just not seeing whats really happening. He has to buy high priced fuel too,it would be lots higher without ethanol, and poisoning the groundwater worse with whatever that additive is that ethanol takes the place of.I still dont get the badmouthing of ethanol when the speculators are causing the high fuel prices. This has to be one of the most outrageous scams ever put on the public. The speculators causing this probably wrote the story.

Trucker40 - More babble from you. Premature tax subsidies and mandated production of corn based ethanol by Congress "before" the technology for bio-fuels was mature will go down in history as a very expensive experiment that did "NOT" work. The energy conversion, using corn, is simply not attainabe (presently) for it to be an efficient process (although some improvement in technology has occured since the 1970s). There are other plants that are efficient (think Brazil and sugarcane). Without massive tax subsidies from the US federal government (and some states) there would simply be no private investor funds to build corn based ethanol plants - period.

I think the Turkey farmer made a good point and certainly had the right to do so. bob farrell
