Farmall Super A Brakes

I"m missing the Brake lock on my 1949 Super A. I assume it is a bar from the brake peddle shaft. The small swing latch is there. Unable to find one yet. Does any one have a photo of one, that I might be able to make myself.

Found out the newer part number on the axle oil seal from www.ebatmus.com is 472222, the old national number was 410060 SSR. Ordered one from Bates Corp, but twice the cost. Also found out that most oil seals are about .125" thinner than the old ones.

That's an odd part to be missin' there, Farmer.

If I'm readin' right what you DO have is the little toggle that pivots on a pin toward the rear of the slot in your floor pan. If so, what's missin' is a whole chunk of steel that welds to the outside of the right brake shaft. It's not something I think you'll find as a separate part. If you don't have a pedal guard, I suppose it could have been torn off, but that's a real long shot. Otherwise there really isn't enough stress in its regular function for it to fail on its own.

If it is missing, you ought to be able to find evidence of it having once been there. If you can get thee to a parts book, you might get a better idea of what and where it is, but I'll try to describe it. It was flat on the bottom, with a radius on top that was notched with teeth (similar to those on your speed control) that engaged the pawl on your toggle. It was the same thickness as the flat steel of the cam on the end of the brake shaft. It was welded, with the flat bottom offset to the rear, in line with the inside of the cam, that is before it was offset out to where the rod to the brake band connects, with enough clearance between to get a cotter pin into the back side of the clevis pin.

Maybe someone has a pedal layin' around in the parts heap that could measure one up to give you some actual measurements that you could use to fab one up. If not, it might be easier to find a salvage shaft.

I'm not sure which one you're looking for, but here's them both.

It's U-shaped so that once the pedals are 'tied' together, you can still catch the sole of your shoe under the upper 'lug' and disengage them.
Also, there's a springy piece of flat metal on it's axle within the pedal that provides some resistance and acts to keep it from flopping around.

I'm not sure that the pawl in the second photo is shaped exactly right, because it doesn't want to stay engaged in the ratchet. One of these days, I'm going to have to pull out the file.

If you need a different view, let me know.

Thanks for the photo. It is the second one. I'm guessing someone had taken it off. I'm still contacting Parts/Yard people. Is there a chance you can shot a photo of the bottom side. Looks like my latch is also wore, and needs a little fileing.

Thanks again guys for the info.

I was able to open and enlarge the photo. Thanks now I know what I need. Yep Someone as replaced the brake peddle shaft. Don't need another photo.

OEM Tractor Parts carries both the parts you need. I purchased both parts for mine to take some of the play out. The brake shaft worked perfect but the brake pawl while it looked correct would'nt lock in place, much like what Pete said his would/would'nt do. The original pawl is more pointed where it engages the grooves and a little differant angle underneath than the replacement or the one Pete shows in his photo. I think if the rounded "head" were filed down some it would work.

The more I talked to people the more I heard the re-placement parts didn"t hold, so I saved $50, and build my own. Works great here in the Colo Mountains.
