OT: radio static

We always have a radio playing in the barn 24/7. I inherited an old upright freezer recently and once it's plugged in, the radio has lots of interference/buzzing. Tried changing outlets with no success. Any thing I can do for this besides unplugging the freezer?

If possible, I'd try moving the radio away from the freezer. The freezer is probably interfering with the radio signal due to close proximity. Sounds like a truck I had one time- If the radio was on AM, you could hear the interference when you revved it up between gears. It was sort of an audio tachometer.

go to your local radio shack or electronics supply and pick up a plug in line filter for the frig and one for the radio.

The freezer probably has a bunch of loose connections though it shuold make noise from those while the compressor is running. Or it could be that the thermostat is only opening a few thousandths of an inch and its sitting there arcing most of the time. If it never stops making noise, its wasting energy all the time. Its probably not well insulated and so if it gets cold its an energy hog. It may pay (in lack of radio interfrence) and energy savings to scrap it and buy a modern freezer.

Freezer should be wired to its own breaker. Static could be from many different things. Make sure that its a good ground and wired correct.
