hydraulic crimper

I have a Gates 707 crimp machine with 6-piece dies. These will do the being phased out two-piece pc fittings but not the newer megacrimps.
I had a Weatherhead coll-o-crimp setup, but my distributor changed to Gates and replace it with all new Gates. No charge.
I'm thinking of trying the Weatherhead(u-series) in my Gates machine. The Gates and Weatherhead hoses are the same dimensions, so if I end up with the specified o.d. of the crimp I don't see a problem.
Any ideas?

I don't claim to know all the specifics about each brand machine and it's dies nor the different brand of hoses and fittings and dies for each of them. That said I have been a mechanic long enough and had enough hoses of different brands and sizes made over the years to know that the different brands aren't all the same. There are differences in the ways the sleeves grip the hose when crimped, the reinforcing wires in the hoses aren't all wound the same or to the same diameter (and this can greatly effect the grip)there is one wire, two wire, four wire, and six wire hose and fittings for each, the hose itself isn't always the same diameter for a given size, the ID and OD of the sleeves between brands isn't always the same, the crimp pattern isn't always the same (and that's going to be tied in with the thickness of the sleeve, how it's designed to grip the hose, etc), and I'm sure there are other differences I've failed to mention. In other words there are alot of things that effect the strength of the crimp beyond just the final OD. Granted the diameter of the finished crimp is one thing checked when installing the correct fitting onto a hose of the same brand to make sure it is fully crimped and is gripping like it should. In your case I think it would be a worthless measurement because you'd be using dies not designed for the hose and fittings your wanting to use. I'm not going to tell you it won't work, because it might with all or some sizes, but it might now on one or all sizes. What I will say that what your talking about doing is making a connection and then using probably 2000psi plus of hot oil as your test medium. Now me personally that's not really the kind of quality control test I'd want to be involved in. But that's just my .02 on the subject.

Don"t do it. I been down a similar path trying to crimp Parker fittings with a Weatherhead crimper. They all blew off at the worst possible moment (hydraulic dump lift over a truck), this was after I had checked the final crimp diameter and all were ok. I"m lucky that someone didn"t get hurt. My thought are that you are setting yourself up for a losing a lawsuit if you do not use the proper crimper/fittings for the hose.

The crimper comes with a chart to set the dies size and amount of crimp if you use another brand in it how will you know where to set the crimp size.

We used fittings you could install by hand here's a pic of one. I made them up when my Super C blew a line and I replaced both of them. We used Aeroquip & Alemite. Hal

The answer is NO. If something happens you will be in the biggest legal mess you never even dreamed of. When we had the weatherhead classes out at where I worked that was one thing they stressed You don't use one brand of hose and another brand of crimper and ends.

The blue hose in the photo is a medium pressure
1 wire braid hose. BE SURE when applying
hydraulic hose that you know the system pressure,
and purchase hose rated for that pressure.
I had a Weatherhead machine for many years, and
used Weatherhead, Uniroyal, and Aeroquip hose
and fittings. As long as the hose is compatable
with the fitting and crimped to the manufacturers
specs, you shouldn"t have any problems--- That is
to say that if you use and Aeroquip hose, for
example, Aeroquip ends, and crip to Aeroquip
specs, and verify crimp with a calipers or
micrometer, it shouldn"t matter whose machine
it is crimped in. Mixing is another situation!
