Had some minor flooding in our township last year. Guys on the board (I know them personally) drove around to assess the washouts and damage. Very little. They put in for a FEMA claim of $2,500 and that was figuring high because they figured $1,800 should do it but $2,500 to make sure. They were completely shocked when they received over $72,000. One called the yaks at FEMA telling them they made a mistake but were told that they had done their own assessment and that was the figure they came up with. That's without ever driving the township roads.
Anybody buying votes this year?

Let me guess, if they keep the $72k it will go into the pockets of the elected township good ole boys. But they will buy some culvert pipe and a few water pumps just to make it look good.

Guessed wrong. Things don't work like that. The money is being used. Projects that were coming in the next few years like a small bridge due to be replaced is now going to be replaced. All the roads got rocked this year compared to alternating roads over a few years. These township board members are fine common people and I do trust them completely.

I have been a township trustee for over a number of years and that is not how we do things. We meet once a month and conduct the business of the township. We spend and account for the money as if it was our own. If we had this happen we would certainly try to return it and if they wouldnt take it we would use it to improve the infrastructure of the township. Alot of people bash township government but here in rural IL it is government of the people, buy the people, for the people, not a bunch of politicians in a big fancy building spending our money and getting rich. If you havent been, then go to a meeting and get involed. Meet your officials and get to know them. They will be happy to hear your concerns and will address them. Governemnt fails to work when we have no voice. You can easily have a voice at the township level so dont be afraid to be heard.

Now just multiply that $72,000 by the factor of the size of your twp compared to Iraq.

The waste....

Bill, that might be the way you do it BUT, it aint the way it's done here .Our commisoners take care of their pet projects FIRST,and can give you ten reasons to he$$ why they can't help you .Politics is Politics no matter where you live, If their not crocks when they get in, their crooks when they get out, and will be richer also............Jim in N M

I'll have to agree. Township boards in this area are the most efficient government entities in America. Sad part is, we still have to live by "big government" regulations, and try to do that efficiently.

It's pathetic, and I think some politicians are catching on that if you can defer maintenance for 10, 15 years and wait for that rare 6" of rain in an afternoon...you can get FEMA to buy a whole lot of "disaster" damage.

(And I know of Federal boondoogles in my area all the way back to '55 where they replaced infrastructure that was already abandoned BEFORE the flood).

Our township is already in pretty good shape. What I'm saying is it is FEMA that is the problem just shoving money. I actually blame the administration for incompetence. You know, the "good job Brownie" folks.

I am glad that you are an Honest guy. But many in Governement, federal, state, local level run for office to enrich themselves.....You have to agree with this statement. I have seen it before. Where my parents live a developer went in and wanted to put up a highrise condo complex and the people were able to shoot it down but 1 person on the township board was pushing big time for the condo...Why-likely bribed by the developer. (Right)! That was in 1989.
Ask yourself this question, Lets say a large construction company came to you and gave you (or wanted to give you) $100,000 in cash for the approval of a large subdivision or condo complex, would you have the money slipped to you or would you say -NO WAY BUDDY- my integrity is worth more then $100K. I am also an honest Christian guy.....But temptation can be very great in some cases.
