O/T 12 guage shot gun

I was out today with one of my 12 ga shot guns waiting out a varment. While sitting there I got to thinking back about the first time I fired a 12 ga. It was my grandad's old stevens double barrel 12 ga that gun was 75 years old or better 45 years ago. Grandad would let me shoot his 22, But the 12 ga was off limits for me at 10. One day I told him I was old and big enough to shoot it. So after missing a ground hog with the 22. He let me take it and wait out the ground hog by its hole. Finally it came back up and I shoot, My God what a noise when that old gun went off and it broke into like I was loading it. I guess that it was worn in the catch to the point it would stay caught? He would not let me shoot it ever again because it was unsafe. You can lock the barrels and snap it back open with out hitting the release I found out later on. It had not ever done that in the past grandad said. I still have Grandad's old double barrel, But its not been shot since then. Do you guys have any old gun stories?

Don't we all? No wonder my mother had grey hair by the time she was 29. Go Lord, is no wonder she kept driving my older brother and me down to the orphanage and telling us to "just get out". Neither of us was even 10. Now that I think about it, we still owe her some apologies for back then because we sure pulled some stuff when Dad wasn't home, but poor Mom was. They didn't have gun locks back then, and the gun cabinets didn't either. Holy cow, you bring back some memories. Cowboys and indians using a real bow as long as I was tall, and razor tipped arrows, real ones. Well, we didn't get hurt, didn't hurt anyone, and no one got killed. Yep, we sure do owe Mom some apologies now that you brought it up. I'll see her this weekend and ask her to forgive...my brother. Grin.

My grandpa had an old Stevens .22 crackshot he let me shoot pretty regular. The old gun had a "rolling block" single shot action. The last time I ever shot it, I was about 12. The block didn"t close completely. When I shot it, the rear of the shell exploded and left me with little pieces of brass needing to be picked out of my face and ear. That was the last time it was ever fired. It"s still in my safe, and when I see it it brings back good and bad memories!

stevers 12 ga single barrel with plastic stock kicked like misouri mule on sweet feed. gramma said leave it alone didnt shot hole thru upstairs sealing thru the roof. old uncle roland sawed the barrel off and it still kicked. only to be kicked by it again the old ones are all gone and i am raoidly becoming the old one

The first time I shot a 12ga. I was a teen. I was at an amish store, it was a used double barrel. I shot it up in the air. A little while later there was a bunch of pinging on the tin roofs as the buckshot rained down. That's the only time I ever experienced that.

The lighter the gun the harder she kicks- sawing off the barrel only made it lighter. I saw an old book that showed goose guns, like 8 and 6 gauge. Talk about cannons! Anyone ever see or shoot one?

No old gun stories, but I remember a chain-smoking, hand-shaking, coffee-drinking 4H gun safety instructor. We sat around his kitchen table passing a single-shot .22 around, each person checking to make sure it wasn't loaded, even though we saw the guy right next to us check it. The lesson stayed with me all these years. It's the first thing I do when someone hands me a gun or when I pick up my own.

I would find a gunsmith and have it checked out. Might be a simple fix ?
Dad took me to a trap range and I got to use Grandpas model 12, now mine, Im not sure how old I was maybe 13 or less ? I seem to remember doing VERY well that day especially for a beginner 18 out of 25 sticks in my mind ? must of made my Dad look bad as we never went back to a trap range since. We did shoot some at my uncles farm with our own thrower though.

was trap shootin with some friends in the field one time, my buddie brought his grandad with him, grandad had an old winchester 12ga breech load single shot. grandad says here give er a try. the gun was well worn, no butt plate on the stock, just kinda sanded smooth. ok. pulled the hammer back, hollered PULL!!! squeezed the trigger, gun went off, kicked like a mule, my thumb bumped the breech release, ejected the shell, put a dent in my forehead, knocked my hat and glasses off, shoulder hurt like heck , i turned around kinda dazed, grandad was laughin like crazy. yup he says does that every time!!!! i never shot that gun again.

I have a single shot 12ga that my grandfather found in a train box car when he was a young man (early 1900's)while cleaning it out. It is made by New england gun co. and has a 40" barrel. it has range. My dad would pull up and shoot and knock a bird down after us kids had shot three times. Of course I missed because I thought it was a hen. YA. I have other old guns I will try and write about later.

A local auctioneer told once about a time they were auctioning off a double 12 guage shotgun off of a flatbed full of stuff.

The auctioneer was calling bids and the ringman was standing on the flatbed holding the shotgun in the air. About then, someone threw a cherry bomb under the trailer.

The ringman had to go change his pants and it took about ten minutes for everyone to become composed enough to proceed with the auction.

Got that lesson myself. Moved to Phoenix and visited an old co-worker. He wanted to show me his new aquisition, a Ruger P-something. I said it wasn't a good time with his wife and kids/neighbors kids in the room, but he insisted. He said it wasn't loaded. He handed the thing to me and I pointed it at the floor and checked it clear. It was not. The shell jumped into the air and when I closed the slide, it chambered the next. Heck, had I thought it was loaded I would have dropped the clip first, but what kinda idiot carries a loaded weapon into a room full of kids and hands it to someone? I dropped the clip, cleared the loaded round and handed it back to him with the slide locked open, clip out and two rounds laying on the carpet. Scared the shot out of me...

Kid I grew up with sent a VCR to Glory with a 410 that his dad cleared for him.

I had a 30-06 fired in the next room by my brothers "friend?". Ever hear a 3006 indoors?I didn't hear much for a while after.....got clean underwear though!

My grand daddy, gone some 30 years now, gave me his model 1897 Winchester pump 12 guage when I was about 16- a fine old long stroke pump gun with blueing so worn it almost looks like it's stainless. It wasn't until years and years later that I discovered the whittled piece of wood he put in it to limit it to the legal 3 shot limit- carved like a totem pole with faces and squares and spheres. Still a fine quail gun

When I was a kid, my dad inherited my grandad's guns. My favorite was a winchester model 12 20 guage and a lefever nitro special double in 12. I fired both barrels of the 12 once and thought I was going to die!

I got my first gun for my 11th birthday, a Remington 20ga. Last year he gave me his old Mossberg 500 ultimag pump 12ga. 3inch max with a 32" barrel. It never really worked for him but it works real good for me. Proved it to my dad by taking a snow at 70yards with that new dead coyote T-shot.

Had an uncle take a .22 out of the trunk of his car, two young cousins & myself standing close-by, uncle has barrel pointed upward, lets the gun slip 6", butt hits pavement & guess what, it shoots! Fortunately, everyone is OK.
Later got to take marksmanship course at Boy Scout camp (1960s) & the gun safety lessons stick in my mind to this day.

I have an old 8 gauge shell that was left in an old mobile home on the farm I own. I looked on the web and it says they are still popular in England. Over here they use them for the small cannons.
