In search of old hay wheel rakes/hay wheels.

I'm looking for a particular kind of hay rake or hay wheel. It's likely that it's not manufactured anymore. I have several in storage that appear to be from the 50s and 60s, judging by the rust and wear on them. I have been told by someone that these are New Idea hay rakes/hay wheels. Short description: a wheel with six internal spokes, with a total diameter of 48". On the outer edge, there are attached coils of metal doweling that extend into angled/pointy spikes, placed approximately 3" apart. From spike to spike, there is a total diameter of 60".

I'd like to find as many more of these as possible. I have found several that feature rubber "spikes," and I really need to find older hay wheels with metal spikes. Any and all information is appreciated. Thank you.

Farmhand (brand name) rakes used to be common up here in the northland. Are these rake wheels similar to what you are looking for?

These are exactly what I'm looking for. Do you know where I can get some of the wheels? Wow, I can't believe it!!!

Thank you,

A neighbor has a rake like that he may be junking out, but freight from ND would be a KILLER!

Bob,

My parents live in Nebraska and could go pick it up and drive it out. Feel free to e-mail me directly at [email protected]. If it's easier for me to contact your neighbor, I'd be happy to do that as well.

Thanks for all your help.
I really appreciate it.

Coupe,

I will ask the neighbor about his rake. He no longer uses it, and had mentioned selling it or parting it out. But you know how that goes!

Also, you might try going to the site linked below, and asking for an "old Farmhand wheel rake". They will accept submissions by phone or email. And, of course, you could try similar venues, as well as Craigslist in your folks' area.

Bob,
Thanks for all your help. I would really appreciate you speaking with your neighbor. I've been trying for quite a while to find this particular type of rake and this is the first I've been able to find.

I know it's somewhat of a pain, but I'd be willing to do all the leg work. You could tell your neighbor he wouldn't have to bother with anything.

Again, thanks for your help and I'll wait to hear back from you.

I talked to him this morning. He has two six-wheel Farmhand rakes.

They are for sale, price negotiable.

I can get some photos within a few days, if you'd like.
