Been battling a simillar problem on a 71 chevy truck, but seem to have gotten it straightend out as of yesterday. Crushed fuel filter because of too heavy a spring in the carb housing was a big one. It had a bunch of other small problems that added up to a pain to diagnose. You might check for kinked rubber or metal fuel lines on the underbody. Sounds like a kink is letting enough fuel to pass to run a short time, but not enough to keep going.

Something in the fuel tank? We had a big old engine do that one time. Turned out to be a grease rag in the fuel tank. Accident? Mischief?

My 82 Chevy 6.2 non-turbo started doing that and found I need to rebuild the injector pump. The governor is breaking up and chokes the valve to the return line on the top of the pump. Very expensive!

I'm having the same problem, sort of, with my 1994 6.5L diesel. The "service throttle soon" light comes on, along with 4 different "codes" when I plug in the code reader. Dieselplace.com won't let me ask over there without registering. I registered a few months ago and I don't remember my name and password!!! Won't let me try a new name either. Local dealers are NO help, all they want me to do is "bring it in and we can put it on the machine". Don't know what I'm going to do.

Had the same problem with my 6.9 Diesel F350. Did several things with no help, and then by-passed the water separator and it works fine. Will replace the serarator some day.

check the amount of power coming thru the oil pressure switch to the pump.worked on a 93 gmc that would keep runnig out of fuel.we changed the pump also but later found the swich at the back of the engine was bad.would only send 6 volts to the lift pump

Have a few of these trucks. To tell if lift pump is not working you can usually pull fuel filter on back of engine and if it isn't full it is either the lift pump or the pump switch relay which is part of the oil sending unit. Very common problem. Had one last week that they thought the injection pump was going bad but had good power and smoke once you got it going. Didn't really have a idle problem either as when the pump is going out the engine usually won't idle without a little pedal. Was hard starting when warm also. Starter turned kind of slow and found out that when motor is cold pump only needs 100 rpm to come to pressure and start which would be 200 engine rpm. But when warm it needs 180 to 200 Rpm at the pump which is 400 engine Rpm. Put on new Starter and have since had no problems and starts and runs like champ!

Most likely cause... PMD! Just replaced one my dads truck with a relocation unit I got off E-bay. Check for them there... I think just under $300 for the whole setup. Made in the USA too I beleive!

Easy to see if you're getting fuel to injector pump.Loosen the air bleed cap at top of fuel filter in back of engine and have someone turn on key.Fuel should stream out.
