Well I see Dave of MN ask if anyone else is having trouble drying hay. Yes, I thought it was to early to bale but my wife with her more sensitive fingers said it was time. 12 bales and one string dropped when the joining knot hit the knife. (sm sq). Stopped to check and yep, baling wet hay. Quit right there. Last night it rained. So what is the quality loss on down hay? Having to turn again? I sell to horse owners so what to expect? Bob

MN Bob Well.......... I also sell to horse people at $4.00 a bale. I just put up 250 bales of alf which cost me $108.00 fuel ...15.00 twine. I cut on the 16th and it rained about all week. Finally got it baled 23rd. Probl for me is alf gets dry rain and hail come knocks leaf off. So long and short for me is 4.00 x 250 =1000 dollars. I hauled 106 bales to sale barn prob get 1.50 for. we'll see lose of few hundred dollars. :[

I have horses and also now raise my own hay. Rain can reduce the nutrients in the hay, but not necessarily ruin it for horse consumption. If it got rained on just once, I would turn it and make sure it was dry with no mold and bale it. I would also spend the money for a forage test. If you have long time customers and let them know it was rained on once and provide the forage test, they should accept the hay.

When I was buying from producers that historically had good hay, if they let me know the circumstances I would still buy it (BTDT).
