OT--Ford ranger diesel

Thinking about getting an older Ranger with a diesel. Hope it will use 1/2 the fuel my Ford with 6.9 does. Have not even looked at the Ranger. Said to be rusted but runs ok. Did the ranger diesel have a good history?

Try searching Ranger diesel Forums and you will probably find the talk you are looking for. they are so rare that most people don't know they exsisted.

Actually there were two diesels put in the Ranger, from 1983 to 1984 they had a 59hp Mazda engine, from 1986 to 1988 they had a 86hp Mitsubishi-built 2.3L turbodiesel. In 1989 the diesel idea was dropped. I wouldn't want to be trying to find parts for either engine 20+ years later.

A 'regular" Ranger from late 80s early 90s with the 2.9L "Cologne" V6 gets great mileage and is good for about 200K+ without an overhaul if you change the oil like you should.

I have a neighbor who has one, he told me that there were only 13 imported the same year as his, good luck finding one!

Thay also had dual tanks. I would not want to be trying to find parts for it either, you may have to source parts in south africa.

My boss has an '85 or '86, I think, that he aquired from his Dad who'd been the original owner.........mileage is 40mpg plus(Imperial gallons)

He said he had some issue with glow plugs but other than that it has been fairly reliable..........obvioulsy not a vehicle intended for the 1/4 mile though!

In 2001 I bought a new F-250 and in the truck brochure they had an all electric Ranger for sale. If I remeber it didn't have much driving range.
Barry.
