how do I get my water temperature gauge to work?

the water temperature gage wasnt working on my model H so I ordered a new one.
When I got it, I took the old one out of the engine and the antifreeze rushed out.
Oddly the needle on the new gage never moved during 45 minutes of use.
I concluded that it was also bad and got another new one.
the needle does not move on it either but when I dip the probe in a pan of boiling water on the stove, it moves to hot, as it should. What causes this problem?

The engine is not getting very hot. They were designed to run cool so cover the radiator and work the tractor hard to see if the temp comes up. Your new gauges are most likely just fine.

I had the same problem, take it out in the field and hook it to do-all or big disk, put her in third gear, about three forths throttle and let her rip, temp. will come up shortly, hammermill grinding corn will do same thing

Make sure that you have a thermostat in the cooling system. You"re not getting it hot enough most likely.

Did you remember to re-fill the radiator after "the antifreeze rushed out". If the probe isn't covered with liquid it won't register, even if the coolant is boiling.

You can check the gage by heating some water on the stove and sticking the sensing bulb end in the water. If the needle doesn't respond in boiling water...
