Corn related question

I am learning about growing corn the last 2 years. I have heard the terms "top dress" and "side dress". What is the difference between the two?

Thanks

Top dress is to spread fertilizer over the top of the ground. If the corn is up, fertilizer in the whirls causes stress. If the fertilizer has urea, there is a serious danger of it volatizing and leaving.

Side dress is to put the fertilizer in the ground in narrow stripes between the rows of plants. Often after the corn is up.
