john deere 60 alternator conversion

i contacted gennese and got a price for a complete alternator conversion kit for my 53 jd 60. i use this tractor for raking hay and odd jobs plus a little drive once in a while. is there any pros or cons to going away from the generator setup? thanks, keith

Hello rausch in battleground.
Alternators are by far better then the old generators. They can put out 1/3 their capacity at idle, much better system chargers.
Go with a 1 wire setup, and away you go.If you need to monitor the battery state of charge use a volt meter on the dash.

All good in theory but it usually results in a tractor with an alternator with no wires hooked to it. And the battry getting a charge every night. Sometimes some sparks and smoke too as the diodes get forward biased during the connection of wires.
Then about 10 questions and responses on ytmag on how to hook up and alternator and make it work.
The Delco gen 1100309 used after serial #6030000 has plenty of output.
Many times "charging trouble" with a generator is somebody who has set the cutout screw too tight. Or doesn"t have the charging voltage high enough as they tried without a voltmeter.

Both systems charge the battery- that is their purpose. If you go from 6V to 12V with the alternator, the starter spins faster, and the tractor starts easier, but that might be a winter issue. If you are just making hay, odd jobs, driving...summer fun...why not keep it original?

The JD 60 came from the factory with 12 volt electrics. What are you talking about 6 volt?
The low powered batteries of 1953 easily started even the high compression LP 60. Exact same system as the gasser 60 and all fuel 60"s used too.
