Mag and Oil

Im counting the days until i get to get my B running. She has a mag, and in testing it found that 3 of the 4 "quadrants" have a nice blue spark, but the top left quadrent has nothing at all. Where do i start?? Never been in a mag before

Also, how do i tell if the gear oil in the tranny is good or needs to be replaced???

Lanse heres advice my dad gave me with buying equipment. Never assume the oils and fluids are good. Every time my old man would buy a piece of equipment whether it was a tractor, truck or a baler all of the fluids and filters were changed. Didnt matter whether the previous owner said he just changed them or not

His reasoning, "Now i know what type of oils/ fluids are in it, when they were put in it and what type they are".

Lance how do you know it has no spark or have you tried my way to test it to be 100% sure LOL. First thing I would do it pull the top cover off and make sure things in there are nice and clean and shiny. As I told you when I sent it I was not 100% sure how good or bad it was so at least you know its 75% good. LOL. Have you also looked in the manual I sent you to make sure it doesn't tell you what might be wrong??

It worked the first time, LOL musta snapped on one of the other 3 things. I'll look in there, but what exactially needs to be clean and shiny???

im so cheap i skin buffalo hides off nickels, but i think it would be money well spent. What goes in there (1939 B, PTO, Belt, NO HYDROLICS)???

Make sure that the terminals in the cap are CLEAN and in good condition. If they look bad, replace the entire cap with a new one. Since your tractor was not run in a while, it would be a good idea to change the transmission oil.

Well if I remember right there are tab sort of things in there that the rotor pasts by and they need to be clean if they are not then you can loose spark. But with out taking the one mag I have left apart I can not be 100% sure on that. Of course I could do that if you want

If you mean what type of oil, The Farmalls, JD's, and many other tractors use 80-90 gear lube, your manual should say what type and how much oil to use.

There are some appertally for ACs, but for $64 i think i'll run a 3 cylender tractor. Cant these things be had from TSC???

Thanks Rich!! No, let me get in there first and look around. This sounds like something you wouldnt want to run through a bench grinder/wire wheel so i guess sandpaper is the way to go

Lance send me an e-mail and I'll send you another manual I have which might help you figure out that mag. I have to many Lances in my addy book to know which one is you LOL

Check to see if there is any shaft wobble (bad bushing). Lots of times if the cap is wore more in some spots than others the bushing is wore perhaps.

It would be a shame if something broke on your tractor because you didn't change fluids or check everything out in order to save a few bucks. It would be an especially big shame after the work of art done on your heads and such. Dave

You should not run a 4 cyl tractor on 3. I checked the price of a cap on here and it is $54.06, maybe you could put up a wanted ad in the classified ads to try and get a good used one???

Andy.

Lanse I would check the books you have on the oil but I know my 49 B with hyds says to use 20- 30 weight motor oil.
