What deal should I get , owner has 20 acres hay and wants half 1st cutting and keep the 2nd and 3rd cuttings. I cut, rake and bale, what to charge? It is alfalfa hay.

I custom bale hay and you can't afford to bale for just half. I usually bale for either 3 out of 4 or 3 out of 5 depending on the person I'm baling for and the distance. This also depends on the indivuals circumstances as well. If you are baling it with the customer because you need the hay for use for yourself or if your baling it for selling purposes and what you can sell it for and the market you have.
I get quite a few of these type deals every year and it does get pretty old when people just want to keep their ag tax exemption and want to get their place cleaned up for nothing. I don't mean to paint a bad picture of the deal, it can work for both but on halves it really don't cut it anymore here, unless they are going to go in half on expenses, theres an idea, if they want to bale on halves, charge them half price for their half plus get your half of the hay, just thought of that, not a bad idea, hmmm, not bad for this early in the morning, lol and no coffee, lol

Without knowing the expected yeild it's pretty hard to say...
That's why I prefer an hourly rate. It costs what it costs. If they want the hay, they keep it. If you want it, you buy it for an agreed price. Make sure your hourly rate is high enough to make some money at it.
I've seen fields here that wouldn't pay for themselves on an hourly rate. If they can't do that, how are you going to make anything on shares?
50/50 here would be for someone in desperate need of feed to do that work CONSIDERING that they were pulling off a heavy crop. Otherwise it just doesn't pay. Fuel here right now is running at 5.55/gal. For me that's 20 bucks an hour to fuel a tractor on the discbine....
50/50 gonna pay that for you?

Ive put up a lot of hay at 50/50 shares and made money. Now with the price of fuel and expenses it would have to be at least 60/40.

Depends on what type of hay your putting up. Everyone around here that wants to do on shares don't have much more than a weed patch.

I've put up hay you couldn't rate it at bales per acre, instead it was acres per bale. Was tempted to charge them extra for mileage.

Well... I got about 16A and I figure it will cost me Too Much just to Bush Hog it and the hay is wasted Sooo... I let My neighbor cut it FOR IT, I figure We both Win. I'm not Too Excited about paying $$$@$# for For Diesel or the Time taken to cut it, Just MY $1.99 worth, and I have a Good Neighbor also.. Larry KF4LKU
