OT, soybean on food plot

well we went to check out a few food plots we put up on the upper side of the property, we planted a few pieces of soybean and a few pieces with biologic, beets etc,,

the are coming up good, the soy beans are already producing a white "nut".. and its only like 2 weeks???

I have no idea what the soybean is supposed to looklike or grow too, but man thats fast,,

That white "nut" is the cotyledon which is really the seed as it emerges on the stalk. The next stage will be a pair of unifoliate leaves and then the rest of the leaves will be trifoliates. Depending on the variety the beans will be from 32 to 48 inches tall. In about a month they will start to flower at the base of the petiole. These flowers will be the site of the pods that actually have the soybeans in them.

Soy beans grow on an upright stem and produce "fuzzy" pods when they start to ripen. I wanted to try a few soybeans too, but couldn't find a small quantity. My grain sorghum came up right at 10 days, which I thought pretty good since we haven't had much rain and my ground is light. Seems like there'd be a good business for grain elevators to sell bulk for food plots. Maybe we just need to ask. Mixing our own is a lot cheaper and better than buying pre-mixed. We can use nmore expensive stuff and not so much junk just to fill the bag.

thanks for the info, my feed guy handed me a bag that the rats got into and said use it if you can, I heard the deer like it so I planted some and so did the neighbors, I didnt realize it got so high,

thats a one yr only crop right/.? if I wanted it again next yr I would need to replant? thansk pat

Yup. You'll have to replant. You may get a few volunteers from this years crop. Do deer eat the plants green or the beans when ripe? Or both?

I am not sure when they eat it, if its like anything else I plant, it will be before I want them too, . like my sweet corn haha,,

I am kinda experimenting to see if they eat it , and when myself, If they do good I will plant more, I never thought about getting some "volenteers" ,, I would probably just have to dry them out,, a few dollars savings maybe, huh?
