I feel like a Junkie coming off a buzz..My HP computer hard drive failed last week..My ex B.I.L. came over last week to check my computer for problems...He did several tests on it and all pointed to Hard Drive failure...He saw the forlorne look in my eyes and said he would bring over his old pc for me to use while mine goes to repair place in Florida..Luckily ,I bought 3 additional years warranty for $73.98...First time I ever bought extra warranty...Well , like it or not..I'm BBAACCKK....I never realized how dependent I am with a computer...

My hard drive went kaput a couple of weeks ago. I don't have a service plan so it cost me $190 to have a new one installed. But, I went from a 40 gig to an 80 in the process. This crate is 5 years old, and I should have just replaced it, but I don't want to wind up with MS Vista.

The biggest pain was getting all my various softwares installed and the whole thing operating like I want again. I used my wife's computer for a few days in the process. Thankfully, I had most of the important stuff on my computer backed up.

You're right, you don't realize how much you depend on your computer till you don't have it.

there are drive image programs that allow you to image your boot drive so you do not have to reinstall everything from scratch.they are great time savers.
popular driveimage xl freeware
seagate has a freware for seagate and maxtor drives available at their website.

I can waste away almost all day every day reading every last post on this forum.

I'm really trying..to..do..other..stuff.. during the day. But then it's dark out! eek!

The Western digital drives used to come with disk imaging software as well. I suppose they still do.

Now...go out and spend $100 on a 250 gig or so external USB hard drive and back stuff up to it at least on occasion. I'm sure smaller ones cost less. Nothing like losing important documents, family photos, stuff like that. Hard drives do go bad, or pickup viruses that destroy what's on them and require reloading the OS and losing everything. Stuff happens, so keep the damage to a minimum.

When mine went, it was beyond saving anything. It was acting a bit slow one evening so I shut it down overnight, figuring it would be better again in the morning.

When I went to boot it up in the morning, all I had was a black screen with white letters saying, "System 32 is either missing or corrupted".

Already has, its called linux. An operating system for the rest of us -- ubuntu.com.

And always keep backups, preferably somewhere else, especially in tornado alley or a flood zone.(learned the hard way)
