O/T Any ideas on how to kill nutgrass?

Nutgrass is spreading in my hayfield. Went to the ag supplier yesterday and he called HQ. They say there's nothing you can use that will kill the nutgrass on a hayfield for horses.

Anybody have any suggestions?

I don't know of any spray that will kill it and not the hay. We used to have nut grass problems in continuos corn. Now it's rotated with RR soybeans and no more nutgrass thanks to the round-up. I've never had it persist in hayfields due to being cut off regularly. If in Texas the hay goes brown and dormant while the nutgrass is green you could try a small test patch with round-up and see what happens.

Only option will be to cut it and get the hay gowing ahead of it. Nothing I know of labeled for nutgrass that won't burn bermueda. Sprayed some arrow(Poast, select) on bermueda, came out in two months. Only advice is to live with it until you cut your hay. Probably not what you wanted to hear.

I've been retired for a few years, so you would need to check with your chemical dealer (sounds like you've already done that) or Extension Agent, but...........this is what I remember; Basagran, which is a broadleaf chemical, also works great on nutgrass.

Hire ten Mexicans and get one of those spot sprayers it take a while so don't get excited, but that's what they do here in grass seed fields to clean them up.

Fence it in with electric fence and put hogs on it. They will root down and eat the nuts from which the grass comes. No, I've never done that. This AM I pulled nut grass from the garden. Trying to starve out the nuts somewhere down there in the ground near China.

Its frustrating when something competes successfully with common Bermuda. Hey, I wonder if Bahia grass would choke out the nut grass?
I would rather fight Johnson Grass than nut grass.

Basagran herbicide used to be labeled for it, but you will need to keep the horses off it for a while. Always read the label, and follow the directions on it!

Nancy,

Image nutsedge killer works real good on nut sedge/nut grass. I am not sure about the horses eating it but I would imagine it wouldnt be good to have them in there until the nut sedge is dead or mowed down low. Image is absorbed thru the roots and can be mowed after two days.

Something you might want to check out.

BTW..Im in Wills Point.
