OT 97 chevy 1/2 ton pickup tranny noise

Jacked it up and turned the rear wheel slowly and it sounds like something is rubbing either at the end of the tranny or beginning of the transfer case. Sounds kinda like a brake that is grabbing. Anybody have any ideas or do I just tear into it. Thanks

Drum brakes will make some rubbing sound. The piston in the brake does not have a spring to release the shoes. They will rest on the drums to an extent that it should not grab or be stiff to turn. Being 10 years old, it will have some rust at the end of the working area of the drums. They should be turned if you are planning on installing new brake shoes while your in there.

Is it a 5 speed manual? If it is, they're known to be noisy. Not much you can do about it, except buy a brand new one from GM. You could install a used one with half the miles and it might be noisier.

Back up the train!

Start from the beginning; What's the original complaint?Tranny working ok? What noise are you hearing?Auto or manual, how many miles?Fluid burnt?

Sprag assemblies in autos make scraping noise which is normal.
