Flooding ........ Where is FEMA

I am very sorry to hear about the problems with flooding in the heartland area. Our prayers are with you. Believe me I know what it is like to be flooded out.

But on a lighter note and just for fun.........
Where the heck is FEMA and their free money.

The action reporter on the news yesterday uncovered a lady that applied for and got $130,000. from the Road Home program for her flooded house. The paper work was all in order with a big Approved stamp on the paper from FEMA.
The problem is she lost this same house for unpaid taxes 10 years ago.

And do not expect to use any of those trailers FEMA bought. They have been junked to avoid any more law suits for formaldehyde poisoning.

I am sorry to say it but our goofament and their programs on ways to spend "OUR" money; is a joke.

Everyone is handling this flood situation very well,up here in Iowa.

They are moving in with friends and into hotels.

The hotels are offering discounts to flood victims.

They put out a call for sandbaggers on the TV or radio and 50 to several hundred will show up.

Everyone is helping where they can.

No looting, no panicing, just working to get thru it.

They are down to one sand pit that has sand left or is not flooded out in a 50 mile radius of CR and IC.

All constuction equipment in the area is fighting to save somthing.

Not to many boat rescues cause when people are told to evacuate they are gone before the water gets there.

Not as many displaced as Katrina but in the thousands.

Sandbagging-- when I see a bunch of people on a sandpile helping each other shovel sand into bags, I wonder why mechanization isn't more widely used. For instance, our county dump trucks use salt spreader attachments on the back of their trucks in winter. Those have a cross auger at the gate that feeds the spreader. Why not use that attachment without the spreader, so all workers have to do is hold the sack while the sand flows? Or use gravity fed wagons?

Might be the difference between people, who have worked for what they have and someone who has had the government give them what they want.

Because that truck will fill one bag at a time.

In three hours yesterday 1000 people built a levy around some Uni. of Iowa buildings 6 ft high 2 miles long.

Over 100,000 bags.

After going thru the flood of 93 near St. louis, I can give you an idea of what to expect for help. Corp of engineers will tell you things during the flood and after you flood they say we didn't say that. Then FEMA says this is what we will do to help you. Then They'll say no that's not what we said and or they'll start adding strings. Such as we'll do this but you have to meet and or do certain requirements. Some will only be given minimum while other will come out like Midas.
Main thing is to keep your cool and have patients. Remember your dealing with the federal government

Should have added.

When they dumped a 15 ton load of sand the people would surround it and 15 ton would be gone in 15 minutes.

I grew up in the New Orleans area and still live about 50 miles to the northwest of town.
I can tell you there is no "Might" about it.

Yes we have hard working God fearing people that live in this area; but when I think about downtown New Orleans and the heartland; I think of two totally differant class of people.

They're still in Parkersburg and New Hartford, and alot of people wish the SOB's would leave.
As for sandbagging, when I was working on the road we built a hopper, like a small bulk bin, that would hold a loader bucket full of sand. Just put the bag under, open the chute, and fill it up. The sand couldn't be real wet, or it wouldn't flow good.

Probably because by the time FEMA gets their head out of their arses, the people with flooding problems around here will have already fixed the problem, and got on with their lives, they are not sitting around waiting for FEMA to do it for them. I guess when you are used to solving your own problems, without handouts, the flooding is just another bump in the road.

FEMA's policy, since the Clinton years, is to trust first and verify / prosecute later.

And that's the way it should be. Why should the vast majority of honest Americans be tied up in bureaucratic red tape after a disaster? "Gee, we know your house, the bank with the safety deposit box with the deed, and the county courthouse all washed away...but you have to prove to us you you owned the house before we'll give you money..."

Get them the money based on the best available evidence. Follow up and audit later -- and arrest and fine the heck out of the scum.

If there was anything wrong with what the news reporter turned up was that FEMA audits hadn't been completed.

It used to be that way around here. Then the "professional folks' started moving in. Now they just pile into their flashy SUVs and head for high ground.

Matt this is true.
It is sad when you think of all the bull someone has to go thru to make sure people in need are helped.

I for one would help anyone truly in need my hand to yours. But never threw a government program. Our government is just to big and to many people trying to do nothing but line their pockets.

But lets stop a moment and think about it from the other side.
This lady knew she had no reason to apply for this help other to exploit a bad situation and steal money from the tax payers.
If only the people that really need help were to apply most of the red tape would go away; Fema's job could be done and these people could be helped.
Do I need to remind you of people looting large screen TV's after Katrina in the name of we are hungry. Or the fact that some people are now trying to sue the government because supposedly their eyes are burning from a trailer they were allowed to use for free.

By the time FEMA and the government get involved, these local citezens will have it handled themselves. These folks don't consider themselves "victims", they consider themselves "survivors" and fighters... the best qualities of America. What a difference between this and N.O.....My prayers are with them, and I'm proud of 'em at the same time.

For sure!

You won't hear a "Yous owes me!" from any of those folks. They just pull themselves up, get it done and move on.

They are in the habit of being producers not takers and darned proud of it.

Allan

I've wondered the same thing about where all the bags come from. The govn't must have them stashed all over the place. And- I'll bet if you left the sandbag filling without hand shoveling to a couple farmers, they'd have it figured out in no time.

FEMA is a joke. Look at hurricane Katrina, look at floods in general, I dont know about wildfires and if FEMA gets involved. The Federal Goofamint (funny but true) cant seal the Mexico/US border so why would you think that FEMA would be able to respond in any timely manner.
Home owners insurance doesnt cover floods--hopefully federal disaster relief will come to the aid of many. I dont what my area would look like if we got a foot of rain in a day or two.

I watched the news coverage early this morning and was thinking to myself "New orleans taught us all how to behave in the event of a natural disaster, Where's all the looters? How come people ain't shooting each other? How come things aren't chaos in Iowa?"

Take a tip from the Amish. If someone's barn burns down, the neighbors all get together and build up a new one. They don't have any insurance premiums to pay.

bull shut
ask somebody like Larry 806 who is surrounded by the Amish about how they help their selves to anything you got. how they tresspass on your property to do what they won't on their own property.
Amish have had some very good publicity that covers up for the bad ones in the group

"sue the government because supposedly their eyes are burning from a trailer they were allowed to use for free."
I guess you've never been a new trailer that the doors and windows have been closed without air.

Workers, not Federaly Assisted Parasites. Most of us including those Iowa folks know what it means to work for a living and know how to make do in the worst of times. Even when your ready to hit the floor from exaustion, us working class know how to dig in even deeper and keep going.

You won't find them living in their own filth in some Astrodome somewhere and then complaining about it because they were too lazy to get up and take their own waste away to another location, their thankful for what they do have because they worked for it and they know how to get it back.

I bet my last buck Iowa will be back on it's feet in under a year, all due to work ethic.

Good vines bear good fruit.

Anyone considered trying to set up some sort of money drive for those folks? Like finding a few good people in the state and sending in money to them to be disbursed to people who really could use it? Grass roots is where it's at folks, waiting for the fed will definitly set them back more. I would send $500.00 and probably more if I knew it would go to help someone in real need of it. I dont consider this a handout, it's a handup to some of the good people who have been carrying the load for the slackers for some time now.

Scott,,,thank you for the support! I am with you . Right now it is a terrible feeling to be sitting on the sidelines and waiting for water to receed . Helpless! Once the waters down and we can get in to help clean up, we're ready , lining up pumps, supplies etc ,,just waitng ,,and not for FEMA or any other handouts .

People are brain washed that the Amish can't do no wrong. Amish built or Amish made is not a badge of honor. You better check out what you're buying.

Gotta ask this. When New Orleans was flooded I read on all these farm sites that it was because of sin and god was punishing them. Why do you/anyone think the mid-west was flooded?

Supposedly eyes burning.
I've been in new, hot, and closed trailers on dealers lots. They'll make your eyes water, breathing hard and skin itch.
I guess your supposedly means that some of them are faking.

Well supposedly was most likely the wrong word.

I believe their eyes are hurting. Every trailer does it to you when new.

The point I was making is that everyone knows that new trailers cause some problems. You live with it; open the windows to air it out; and move on with life.
But NO!!!!!!!!!!
Lets sue someone that gave us a free place to live because we were to stupid to open the windows. That is just a slap in the face of everyone that sent a helping hand if you ask me.

This mind set some people have of everyone owes me something is BS.

Why can folks in Iowa take care of themselves and not have to depend on FEMA? It's called city vs country. Lazy, professional welfare people vs. farm folks that for generations have worked for a living and know how to take care of themselves.

So what does abundant, welfare programs produce?
You guessed it, just what we saw in New Orleans.
That whole area was ran by nnalert for generations. Look what it got them.

OK, off my soap box. Take care guys,

Gene

Well with all due respect to the people experiencing the devastation in the affected areas, I hope they fair well. Hurricane Katrina isn"t comparable to this, two terrible disasters, and very different. They can sandbag because the it appears the storms are giving some breaks, Katrina didn"t. Katrina"s storm surge in Pass Christian, Ms was at least 30". Just what ever. These are two different areas of the country, and yes different people with different abilities because there are NO FARMS IN DOWNTOWN New Orleans. Y"all break an arm patting yourself on the back about how great Americans y"all are, and everybody that"s different is human flotsam. Stay in church now! See y"all, this site should be Klan Central.

Thank goodness the good people of Iowa can just call their insurance agent and collect for their losses. Most of the people I talked with just called ther insurance agents and did not get anything from FEMA after hurricane Rita. This was in sw LA and se TX.

The only reason we'all be patting ourselves on the back is because WE EITHER WORKED FOR IT, MADE IT OR, WE EARNED IT.

I don't see too many people in Iowa SITTING AROUND ON THEIR BRAINS WASTING THEIR TIME COMPLAINING ABOUT FEDERAL ASSISTANCE AND EVERYTHING ELSE SINCE THEIR WORLD FELL APART. OH, I GUESS THE MEDIA IS SENSORING THOSE BROADCASTS.

They are heart broken and fighting their way back, that takes strength and faith beyond what most people can muster. I am certain that if the folks in Iowa received those chemical laced FEMA trailers, they would have found a way to make do with them and been thankful, instead of complaining and suing over it, I know I would.

It all comes down to doing for yourself instead of feeling like your owed, lazyness.

You made a mention of church in a most hipocritical manner, maybe you need to actually go there a time or two, then you might learn that lazy is a sin. But I'm guessing you'd rather wait for 6 or 8 strong men to carry you through the doors. Probably a nnalert.

Lot of folks are not covered for this . Not in flood zone, so no flood insurance availible . Insurance will not cover anything close to what people have lost even if they are covered

I may be wrong but I think in Louisiana one can buy flood insurance even if not in flood zone. If in a flood zone there is special, but higher, insurance rates. If flood insurance is not available in your state you better self insure.

You"re weren"t in New Orleans, and have no right to judge other Americans at all. Wouldn"t go to church because to many self righteous hate mongers there, similar to this company.

Ya, I guess your right were all a bunch of loosers. Looks like your in the minority though, just what most would expect from an unconcious incompentent(someone who doesn't even know, that they dont know).

I was there for 23 days straight, do not try me.

Get in a decent church buddie, then maybe, with the grace of God, you'll become a decent person. While your at it, try doing something of value for someone other than yourself, maybe, just maybe, you will come to understand that nothing of value in this life comes to you without God and everything that you own is on loan by his grace. Get your ego in check quickly, if your over 50, it may be too late. By the way, ego stands for edging God out, only bad comes from that, as you have well proven.

If you were there for 23 days straight, and then trash the people you were there to help, you need much more church than I do. Go to church, and listen to Jesus's teachings.

Kind of narrow minded aren"t you, Scott 2? New Orleans, Louisinanna, Mississippi and that region deserved better than what they got from the Feds (nnalert)

You'll never get anything from the feds, working people don't count on it. It was a nnalert administration but it is the liberals (mostly nnalert) that promote and introduce legislation for funding all those public assistance programs. The system doesn't need fixing, it needs to be wiped. The only real solution is an airstrike, you know where.

Do what I did and see if you don't come to some fast hard conclusions, things get crystal clear in a real fast hurry when everyones basic survival becomes optional. Everyones the same at that point, or at least you would think so. After a few rescues, we could see the stark difference in the quality of the people from how they were behaving, long before we pulled up. If it wasn't for those "entitled" folks, we could have saved many more lives, they cost everyone very valuable time. I know all about Jesus and his teachings, thats also why I fly relief to South Africa on my own dime, trying to push radical nnalert out.

True, speak not badly of others but offer kind words of praise and encouragement. We did alot of that, we also got spit on more times than I can count for doing so. At least I know I still need to be in church every Sunday and Bible school every Wednesday. Tell me more about how you help your fellow man.

Volunteer firefighter for 14 years, and counting.
If the crazies ran you out of New Orleans then, so be it, they brought it on themselves. I just don"t think it is wise to declare all people because of whatever they are not fit. As Americans we should all be given a chance to prove ourselves, remember, if you didn"t meet the NAZI"s expectations you were bound for a concentration camp. Don"t be so quick to blanket all people with judgement. There are many in society that are worthless from the wealthiest to some of the poor. Give individuals a chance, and that is only hope I have alive for this country.
