OT-Automatic Transmission Question

Basic Question: If you're parked going up a hill and you start the vehicle and put it in Drive, should the vehicle roll backwards until you accelerate? Doesn't seem right...what could be the problem.
Livin' in flat country, don't get on many hills...:)

Normal. Your torque converter at idle does not have a fluid lock as you do with higher RPM. I have seen vehicles back down a hill as if they were in reverse.

Perfectly normal.

Think of it this way... That"s the same reason you can sit at a stop sign with the trans in gear without stalling the motor.

It is just a fluid coupler, which allows slippage until the engine rpm reaches the converters stall speed. Most vehicles now have a lock-up torque converter. Works the same, but has an internal clutch that "locks-up" at highway speed allowing for the motor and the trans to be mechanically coupled. This is for fuel efficiancy, lower running temp, lower emissions.

The Ford C2 trans, this is an old and maybe unreliable memory, when in the forword position and not the “D” or “Low”, positions did not allow vehicles to coast rearward while engine idled. Do not know how the newer units are set up.
