O/T: '88 Cherokee auto trans question

The patient: 1988 Jeep Cherokee, 4.0 6 cyl., 4x4, auto(model AW4).

The problem: When you first take off in the morning, reverse doesn't work. Also, it winds way high in 1st gear, basically skips 2nd and drops right into 3rd. Torque converter lockup and overdrive are ok.

It only does this through the first shift cycle. Once you get it to run through all the gears, you can stop, back up, take off normally, everything will work fine.

I have only recently put this vehicle on the road. I know it sat for 1 1/2 - 2 years. I have changed the transmission filter. The fluid smelled strange; not burnt, but did have an odd odor. The pan was pretty clean; no excessive debris. I have a can of TransX cleaner/conditioner in it now.

I downloaded a manual for this transmission, but it doesn't really address this specific problem. What should I do to make it right? Seems like a pressure problem to me, but I don't have a gauge to test it. Debris in the shift valve? Bad control solenoid? If so, why does it work normally after driving a short distance?

Opinions and suggestions are appreciated.

Thank you,

Anthony

I had a similar problem with my '98 Durango. It wouldn't shift out of second until the engine was near redline, until the oil in the tranny got hot, then it worked fine. The problem was a plugged filter. We changed the filter, the oil, and added a can of that transmission-restore gunk. It works almost normal now. Not sure if you have the same issue, but it might be a place to start. Good luck.

The whine typically means the pump isn't getting enough fluid. Lack of fluid usually makes the fluid look brown and smell scorched. I would be definitly pulling the pan and changing the filter before you burn it up. With a plugged filter, it won't take long to trash the whole unit.

I am not familiar with that model, but it sounds like the governor is sticking. There may be a reverse blockout and when the governor sticks you have no reverse. After it warms up, the governor expands enough to free up and it all works normal. I would add another can of conditioner and keep driving it stop and go while hot and maybe it will correct itself. Let us know what you find. Agood tranny shop should be able to put a gauge on it to see if the governor is or is not working when it is cold.
