OT - Propane prices in WI

Just wondering what you are paying for propane in WI. Last year I was locked in at $1.59/gal, not great not terrible. Today got the rates for the coming year, ranging from $2.39-$2.50/gal depending on the program you choose (pre-buy, keep fill, call to fill). Not good, guess I will look a little further into the pellet stoves, although buying pellets isn't too attractive either plus the $2k-$3k price for the stove...

Dont forget, propane is a derivitive of oil. The more oil costs the more gasoline, diesel and propane will cost. Nuff said Henry

Correct me if I'm wrong, and I'm sure someone will, but is propane not a derivitive of natural gas??

Seems it comes from BOTH, WIKI Says...

Propane is a three-carbon alkane, normally a gas, but compressible to a liquid that is transportable. It is derived from other petroleum products during oil or natural gas processing. It is commonly used as a fuel for engines, barbecues, and home heating systems.

Had my house tank filled yesterday, 610 gal at$2.12/gal. Will run the house till next year. I'm in western Ill, thinking about a corn burner. Chris

Solar isn't easy but what choice do we have? I've complained about LP 6 months ahead of you. Since then I've built 100 sq. ft of solar air, 80 sq. ft of solar hot water and insulation. You'll still need LP occasionally but only a fraction of present use. It's fun watching the keep full guy scatching his head staring at a almost full tank.

That's what I was going to say - up a dollar over last year, depending on option. Holding my wallet real tight! ( central Michigan)

Just filled the pool heater tanks for 62cents/liter,$2.35/gallon. They supply the tanks too.
Other local dealers are up to 89cents/liter$3.36/gallon.
Electric resustance heating is cheaper here at $2.09/gallon equivalent to LP at 85% efficiency.
Going to get a set of solar panels for the pool and domestic hot water on of these days.

Propane is a derivative of petroleum; Compressed natural gas is a completely different product. It liquifies at a much higher pressure, and requires very heavily built tanks. You don't see it used much by the general public- the high pressures involved are just too dangerous.

I just paid $3.18 to fill my M670 and UTS yesterday, still alot cheaper than the going rate of $4.19 for gasoline.

Yeah it's cheaper than gasoline, but I don't think anyone uses gas to heat their house. I understand everything is going up, but propane companies (and heating oil) have their customers where they can't do anthing about it (except install a new type of heat source), where companies that provide natural gas I believe need to ask permision to raise their prices (even though i don't think i have ever heard them being denied a price increase)

Propane/butane blends at best have 91,000 btu.#2 diesel 139,000 but and gasoline around 125,000btu per gallon.
At that rate $3.18LP costs $3.05 in gasoline.

LNG or CNG is used sometines on boats and RV's. It is preferable to propane which is heavier than air and will accumulate in lower areas to blow up when a spark appears. LNG or CNG is lighter than air and will rise when released. LNG or CNG is simply natural gas compressed and liquified and placed in a steel tank. Propane is produced as part of the oil refining process, compressed and placed in tanks. The two are completely different products that have just a few common properties. NUff said Henry
