"People" that offer to "help" you out. Rather than just borrowing their cultivator, they insist on just shooting over and hitting it for you. "Gee, thanks, are you sure ya have time because I can get er done later today myself" I say. Next day I realize they took out about as much corn in the rows as they did volunteer corn between the rows, than, get this, then they call ya up to settle up after the call the extension office to find out what custom rates are for cultivating!! Again, I didnt need him to, or ask him to. I was expecting to reimburse him for the fuel after he did come over. Geez, I didnt even charge him ever for anything for the last 20 years. Well, that is one person I will no longer accept the offer of "borrow" from.

I don't like to borrow anything, rather do my own stuff, on my schedule. That results in my having more tools and stuff than I really can justify, but I like toys!!

It"s called getting hard up for money.

Borrowing nowadays means "i"ll want money for that later."

As the prison warden told Cool Hand Luke, "what we have here is a failure to communicate". Got to make things crystal clear when dealing with some folks. You could have said; No I dont want you do to it, I would rather do my own cultivating. End of story. Tom

I have a problem with the young man next door. He is 14 years old and always comes over and wants to help me but he breaks everything he touches.

Jerry , Don't look a gift horse in the mouth ! He offers help . He's young . He'll break things - Now . Stay on his good side and mentor him and you'll have good help in a couple years .

I help people out and don't expect anything, but people want to charge me for any little thing,so i don't ask for help.

Don't need to have one to grow corn. Nice to have some years but you can do without them.

BTW- yes we have one, but up until about 8-10 years ago we never did. Borrowed one every now & then, but ussually just had the coop spray.

Sounds to me like he is saying..no way will he loan any thing to you. Have you borrowed stuff from him befor?
I think you have more problems that a corn patch.

Maybe that was hint #16...that he doesn"t want to loan you anything. Break it off in you good and proper and you won"t be back. Seems to have worked.

I refuse to borrow anything...always comes with strings attached...generally directly tied to my wallet.

That"s why my fence row is full of equipment...may be rare that I use it....but it"s mine and there when I need it.

I'm certainly that way myself - I'll help you, but I don't want you to bust up my equipment. I'll do it for you, but I won't just drop equipment off at your place to beat on for 3 months until you get around to returning it - after I've called 5 times about it.

Both sides to that story. :) :)

Not sure exactly how your deal started, you said he offered to help, did you ask first?

I had a fellow [borrow] machinery and find out later he was doing custom work with it,fills it before he leaves and brings it back empy
No More borrowing period.

When I was a kid, longer ago than I care to admit, getting everyone's field work done was a neighborhood effort.

Your neighbor might have baled your hay while you cultivated his corn, depending on who had the better equipment. Sure as heck isn't like that nowadays.

After I bought my farm in ND I found that having others do things for me always led to dissapointment. No matter how much I paid things got done wrong or didn't get done at all. I ended up buying 3 tractors, a truck, discs, drill, chisel plow, cultivator, rotary mower and a sprayer. I would rather take time off from work and pay to fly back than to accept a favor.

I know a guy that used to be a fairly good friend. We just talked recently after more than a year. He agreed to buy my garden tractor to cut his lawn. He had it and used it for 5 months and even broke the blade engagement cable, so the blades couldn't be shut off. After finally getting a hold of him, he said he can't pay for it! I've helped him and his brothers on the farm too many times to count and then he pulls this. I could have really used the money at the time too. It was only $1350.00 so it wasn't a lot of money, especially if they would have split it 3 ways! I'm learning not to be so nice after getting the short end of the stick so many times. Dave

I know of an incident where a fella borrowed a mower and hit a stump. Brought mower back said nothing parked mower. When he came to get the rake, owner of mower asked if he new anything about how the mower got broke. Fella said I hit a stump. Owner in a nice way informed him that was three days ago would been nice to know about it before I needed to use it. Fella brought rake back and said you need to fix rake. Owner said what's wrong? Fella said I hit that stump again. Owner said Oh by the way I am taking the baler to other farm. I'll be over in a coupla weeks to bale your hay for ya. Fella say can't ya wait until I am done with it? Owners says your done with it.

Yep, BTDT. I had a "friend" who came over a month or 2 ago, insisted on driving my new(er) mower i just got. A little wierd but i said go for it. He has fun with that for an hour or two then decides he has to go home. Then we agree on an old engineless mower for a good battery for my new mower. He doesnt have money for that and talks his dad out of a battery, which he brings over. I get battery and help them load up the mower. LAter find out i got a dead core, as thats what he told his dad to bring. And i find out he ran over one of my moms expensive trees (something like $60) which diddnt survive. He tells me to pay for it and he'll reemburse me. I do and find out he refuses to pay me, so i ate a damn tree. Moral of the story-dont trust anyone. And when i do decide i have $30 to kill on a new battery for the now parked mower i wont humor strange requests to drive it.

I am currently unemployed and usually help friends and family out with my skills and equipment. weather it be mechanic work or just clearing out o fallen tree. Since I don't have a job this week 3 people called to ask what I would charge them to do some work had to do a little soul searching before I called them back and gave a price that I felt was low but put a few $ in my pocket after expenses they seemed happy to be able to help me where they could. In many instances I don't ask for anything but don't forget me when I need something like I helped you. With the ones I have learned I can rely on I rarely even ask for fuel $
