O/T Circuit City goes belly up

I sent the post I did yesterday to folks on my email list. I just got a message from one of my emails that Circuit City has filed for bankruptcy. Guess the extended warranty I purchased to cover the replacement computer is now worthless. Oh well, that's just the way it goes sometimes.

They close the store that I go to in Salem last month was wondering why they did that.

PS I got a 4 year warranty on my new DVD camera.

Believe it or not, I have been having pretty good luck with buying computer related items on-line from Target. Good prices, name brand, and quick and reasonable shipping right to my door.

They recently built a new store around here, in the last 8 months, and Ive never seen more that 10 cars in the lot. Its like a ghost town.

Filing for bankruptcy does not automatically mean that they will close any stores. They probly will have to but Kmart filed, closed some stores, then came back up strong and bought Sears.

Bankruptcy relieves them from debt pressure and gives them a chance to rebound with the courts help.

I had pretty good luck with a similar chain, called Future Shop, 10 or 15 years ago (had three kids- bought lots of computers over the years). They were very good to deal with, right up to when they went bankrupt. I bought one package, I recall, that had the wrong monitor (an obsolete one)- worked OK, but not as bright as I expected. Called them on it- they gave me the correct one, and told me to give the one I had to a kid who didn't have a color monitor yet. So I did.

Target...weren't they the outfit that wouldn't support the military people when they went off to war? Wouldn't save their jobs for them. I wouldn't buy a thing from a company like that. ohfred

Maybe looking at a case of corporate raiding 101.
As previously mentioned K-Mart declared a "crisis", cut wages, wiped out the pension funds, wrote off/dogged debt then turned out rich somehow.

And blamed it on old computer programs that never were fixed but somehow seem to get and keep things in stock......

Kmart came back from bancruptcy because an investor bought them. And the same investor bought Sears so they are owned by the same man or men and is known as Sears Holdings.

(quoted from post at 08:51:44 06/12/08) Target...weren't they the outfit that wouldn't support the military people when they went off to war? Wouldn't save their jobs for them. I wouldn't buy a thing from a company like that. ohfred

Its Target, not like it wouldn't be hard to find a job somwhere else if they didn't rehire you.

Kind of hard to expect them to keep a cashier or shelf stocker position open while you are overseas.

That's really ALL it would take , but people can't see it and keep spending money there! We have the power to make or break ANY company right in the confines of our wallet. Seems we would use the power instead of complaining. WE made these people multi-millionairs just like we have the Indian casinos , AND we can crash their party just as quickly. Might it be that we are too greedy , selfish and spoiled to ever do so??
