I need a new set mine are old. What is a good brand, what is not? There are many old ones that are obsolete. Would like a complete set up. What happened to harris, purox, airco and all these brands? Are there still 2 stage requlators? Give me some thoughts here I am not interested in the cheap imported ones and rock bottom price is not the goal either.

Have you checked into having them rebuilt? Most welding supply houses can have them sent off and come back looking and working good as new. I've done it more than once myself on my rigs.
Most of that older stuff is better than what can be bought new. I am running a gauge/torch setup at the shop that my dad bought used at a farm sale in the 60's.

Dad and I both have Smith torches on our service trucks as well as in our shops. I know Dad"s torch is at least 30 years old and mine probably aren"t too far behind. As far as age and obsolesence of parts the old Smiths we"ve got and the newer ones haven"t changed that much, if at all, in alot of years. They found a good design and they stick with it. We keep a spare valve/handle on the shelf so when one gives trouble in use(usually the valves will start leaking around the packing) it gets put in service while the other gets taken to a local repair shop for service. They always come back as good as new for a fraction of the cost of a completely new set.

CHECK THIS ONE
DT-DHC 2000 Cobra Gas welding Torch kit..
runs at 4psi.. but costly.should come up in the engine.

I'm still using a Sears that's going on 40 years old, still good as new. And it's been used. Besides the usual repairs, small projects, itc., I've built a half dozen stock cars with it, several trailers, and other good size projects.

But, I don't know if Sears' quality is now what it was then.

I just ordered a Victor [u:e03b065c47]H.D.[/u:e03b065c47] complete torch set, with it's own stainless steel storage box. $493.79 with insurance and free shipping. It also has a rosebud and 3 brazing tips, etc. etc. Go to e-bay and look for Victor Torches, I bought mine from Weldfaboulas.

Harris is owned by Lincoln, Purox is owned by Esab and I'm not sure if someone else took over Airco. Harris and Purox are still available and easy to get tips and parts for. You can still get 2 stage regulators, but I don't think you really need them for over 95% of the jobs you'll do. Victor, Purox, Smith or Harris would be a good choice. Go to a welding supply and see which one you like the best and is the most comfortable for you. A lot of it is personal preference. I prefer Purox but a lot of people like Victor or Smith. Just because your set is old doesn't mean you have to replace it. What kind are you replacing? Dave

Victor and Smith seem to be the most popular brands but there are other good ones too. I used a Sears torch for years. Settled on the Smith brand and have the MC and the SC series. One real old Smith that is for cutting only...probably 40-50 years old and still good condition. The Smith company chrome plates their torches...don't know as that makes them work any better but they look nice. Maybe I got a little Harley blood in me. ohfred
