age of tractor

I baught an old ford tractor. It has a 12v conversion on it. The serial # on the engine has 8n145 on it, but it has a 3forward 1 reverse tranny. is there some way to find out how old the back half is. I do know from experience that there is nothing to stop it from starting in gear. My truck found that out the first time I got it started. Any help would be appreciated. I want to restore it back to origanal if possible. I just need to know what i have.

3 speed transmission is 9N or 2N, not 8N. But the engines didn't change until the last year of the 8N so were interchageable.

The steering gear with the three speed transmission should have the shafts out the two sides of the gear box in line and when you hit a curb or a clod it should kick like a mule.

Any of the 39-52 Ford tractors interchange so a 39 9N could have a 52 8N replacement engine and only the 39 - 47 tractos had the 3 speed transmission and the 39 - early 40 tractors did not have a saftu starter interlock and the starter button was on the dash. Not on the transmission housing.
