Considering a Deere M

I am looking at a 47 JD M with a 60 in mower on it. Is this a good utility tractor for mowing? Is there anything in particular to look at on first year of model or otherwise? Thanks, James

We had 2 m's when I was growing up.They were pretty good for garden work and other small jobs but not to good on hill-sides "kind of narrow and tippy". I think I would look for something with 3 point hitch , as it will be easy to find other attachments if you decide to do something else.

pass on the M and get a small Ford or Massey Ferguson for mowing. for cultivating, an offset Farmall is much better. I grew up on a 140 and an A, but my uncle had an M John Deere for a while. I still haven't figured out how they sold the first one when a Super A was competing with it.

I have an M and a 8n. As far far as I'm concerned, the M is the most awkward tractor ever made to do anything with. They do sound nice though.

I remember easily getting stuck quite often with the M , which had good tires. Use to pull it out all the time with oliver 70(bald tires). Clutch was also touchy on M. If not carefull , front end would come up every time the clutch was left out. It did start and run good. I don't think the M would be my choice for anything but play toy.

If you are mowing I dont see a problem with getting stuck,as far as the front end coming up when letting the clutch out I dont see that unless you are popping the clutch (the waterloo built ones are another story.have to agree with the others, there is no easy way to get on or off of one of those puppies.Growing up I put hundreds of hours on an M and with as many John Deeres as I own right now there are better tractors out there for what you want to do other than a John Deere M. Bill M.

The M was an early entry into the small tractor market. Much was learned and the later 40/420/430/440 are somewhat related but much improved.
In all honesty, unless you are purchasing a tractor for parades or collecting. If it doesn"t have live pto, remote hydraulic outlets, CAT I or II three point hitch, a real drawbar and live pto. Just walk on by.
Diff lock and power steering are a real asset
as well.
For the Dubuque sound the slant dash 420/430/440 will provide the same tone. And if optioned decent, will provide features you will appreciate.
