Chevy Pick-up Gas Line

The gas lines that run from the gas tank on my 1988 Chevy K2500 are corroded and leaking. Do I have to replace them with the OEM line that is steel and 'crimped' to rubber hose at the tank or can I used steel line and rubber hose with clamps? Im thinking the clamps will allow gas to leak.

refresh my memory- the 88 is injected, correct?
I have seen and heard of folks using rubber lines on TBI vehicles- double hose clamping the ends. I know that it is not recommended though.

If you are carburated, have at it

Auto parts stores do sell a hose made for the higher pressure fuel injection and clamps for it and it is also higher priced too. Price check GM and then the parts stores. The metal lines can also be repaired with a union and a fuel line repair kit also sold at parts stores. Dorman makes all types of them with the special ends on them.

If that truck has an in tank pump, I don't think hose clamps will withstand the fuel pressure. Hal

You can use rubber hose designed for fuel injection, also use fuel injection clamps. We do it all the time here in the rust belt. Dave

Bull,

That truck has throttle-body fuel injection that operates at LOW pressure- 10-13 PSI.

Have 88 K1500 that lines from tank forward a foot or so replaced with rubber fuel line maybe 5 years ago with no problems.

I drove an '89 Cavalier (2.8L Multiport injection) for 3 years (60k miles) with soft copper tubing for the fuel lines. Rubber fuel line and standard hose clamps connected the copper to the original steel lines.

Lately I haven't found any clamps good enough to use. They all strip when I tighten them up and I am not getting stronger. Maybe some from aircraft would work. Or crimp type but not little worm gear jobs. They are all junk.

I have been in a bind & bought steel tubing from a local ACE hardware store double flared the ends & put rubber high pressure fuel lines at the end w/ good hose clamps on the end next to flared end so the pressure would not make it slip off. good luck
