can someone point me in the right direction as far as an individual or web site where I could find info about getting some more performance out of a 4bd1t,116 horsepower isuzu. it is now in a chevy suburban.thanks Paul

is this the same engine used in the old 1984 chevy chevette diesel? if so the preformance was very poor, but had great fuel mileage. just don't try to pass anyone, including a bicyclist unless you have a very long open road and are going downhill at a 20% grade and the wind is behind you blowing at 30 mph. then and only then ya might pass them. but i did get up to 51 mpg on open road at 55 mph.

Sounds like you've never driven one. The diesel Chevettes are far from unperpowered. They have a lot more snot than the gas Chevettes. I've got two 1981s and drive them around the mountains of New York and on the Interstate. They easily cruise at 80 MPH. If I keep the speed down to 70 MPH, I get 46-48 MPG.

Diesel Chevette, by the way, is 1.8 litres and is a converted Isuzu gas engine - NOT a HD diesel. 51 horsepower at 5000 RPM and 72 lb. TQ at 2000 RPM.

The Isuzu 4BTIT is a whole different deal. It is a very heavy duty truck diesel. 3.9 liter, 110 horesepower at 3000 RPM, and 232 pound-feet of torque at 1800 RPM. It is designed to last 500,000 miles with heavy-duty use.

hay,

I had a Studebaker like that once. Had a flathead six and overdrive. I could get about 25mpg but it was like you said. To pass some one you had to be going downhill with a tailwind.
Or get a running start.

My buddy had one when we were teenagers. It wasn't quick by any standard, but it sure had top end. That thing would get 50 MPG or better.

yes, as a matter of fact i did drive one. a 1984 model diesel chevy chevette. only drove it a short time, about 8 years and 225,000 miles before i had engine problems that were not worth fixing. sure wish i could get another one. great fuel mieage, but way short on acceleration and overall power. seen on the news that some manufacturers might be re-introducing diesel sub-compact autos.

Well - "underpowered" needs a reference frame, I guess. My Datsun 280Z used to be considered fast and an insurance risk because it did 0-60 in less than 10 seconds - but by today's standards - many little economy cars are faster.

Chevy Chevette with the 1.8 diesel has more power - at normal driving speeds and RPMs than any of the gas powered Chevettes - and I had many over the years - 1.4s. and 1.6 gassers. The most commmon was the 1.6 - and it had 77 lbs. of torque when wound up to 3200 RPM and around 55 pounds at 2000 RPM. The 1.8 diesel has 72 lbs. at a lower 2000 RPM. For normal driving at lower RPMs, I find the diesels much nicer to drive. I often drive my four-door Chevette with a dog, little kid, and at times my wife. That's a full load for a small car - and it still runs down the Interstate fine.

Now - what I'd call underpowered was my 1971 Fiat 850 Spyder. That would not go over 50 MPH on a highway if you hit the slighest grade. Same for my 1959 full size Ford with the 223 "milemaker six."

i have an old Isuzu deisel p'up that we use as a farm flat bed...s-l-o-w and steady. I don't know the HP rating on it, but for sure it isn't 115...maybe 35? Frame is just about gone on it, though. Was gonna drop the whole drivetrain into an ancient Jeep I have, but haven't noodled through the independent front axle yet.

Isn't the DuraMax actually an Isuzu engine design?
