Found out last night that the neighbor's boy was scrapping an old Massey Harris. I got hold of him today, but the tractor was scrapped last Thursday. He got three hundred for 5800 lbs.

Just sitting here feeling nauseous..

It was a 44.

You are a very lucky man. The 44 was, to be kind, a semi- worthless tractor. They were practically unsteerable and no wonder with a drive shaft to put the engine as far as possible over the front wheels even though the rear end was light. Moreover, the machinery to fit it was left handed oddball stuff.
 
Well might not be a good tractor.. for I don't know. But like you... hate to see it go to metal!
I know at the auction near me. That scrap bidders where out bidding me almost every time on some old farm equiptment.
 
Sad thing is if they are doing this for the money , but they just lost more money than they sold it for ? Makes no sense to me ? One could of gotten more from you or parted it out to save other machines.
 
I do understand that as far as a working machine, it was likely obsolete. It was the loss of one more piece of history that sickens me. Not that there are not many sitting in fencerows across this great nation, but that this one had been garage kept. It was parked years ago awaiting engine work. It would have made a dandy parts source for those looking to repair their own. Now it is going to China.

The Massey Harris was not so big a hit here, but those out west and our friends just above the border seem to hold them in high esteem. Here the top prizes through the years were awarded to 9n's, 135's, and the new Ford thousand series with a nod toward the 3000. I imagine if it had not been for the Depression, the GP would have been quite a seller.

At ten dollars on the hundred weight on 5800 lbs, he got three hundred....

Oh, I said that once.
