In most cases, yes.

OR, some folks just switch to a 12-Volt regulator, and put a smaller pulley on the generator, and push 12-Volts out of a "6-Volt" generator.

Yes they can be reworked. Why dont you just get a 12v volt one that will fit where yours does now they are available.

Any place that rebuilds starters and alts can change it over for you. I had mine done for my Super M and it works perfect , it cost $100.00 and it's good as new.

Just have yours reworked and everything bolts up perfect with out any crazy changes.

OR, if it's a "working tractor", and originality is NOT needed, a $10.00 "recycled" 12-Volt alternator sure does a better job of keeping the battery charged!

The fallacy of using a 12 volt regulator on a 6 volt generator is the low resistance of the 6 volt fields subjected to double the current flow of the 12 volt system will burn the contacts of the 12 volt regulator.

I agree, but that doesn't see to deter folks from trying it.

Myself, I'll take the alternator!

Easy fix, use the reg field contacts in low current fashion and have them simply drive a nice piece of silicon.. say a 2n3055 or a 2955.. depending on what polarity we are dealing with.
Then use the transistor to power the field .

I agree though.. bad workaround fix to not rebuilding the genny correctly!

A 55 chevy I worked on blew up a new battery.I put an ammeter in the circuit and found it was charging 60 amps at idle.It had a 6 volt generator on it.Early 12v generators were marked 12v on the id tag.If you want to see your battery swell and spray acid you can try the dumb stunt.Too many people repeat wrong info the see on forums.

Its sure is. Any old fashioned genny n starter shop can change it over. Or else just buy an already 12 volt n be done with it. I've even used 6 volt gennys n just changed to a 12 volt Voltage Regualtor n she worked NEVER caused any problems. NOTE Im NOT saying thats engineering correct or that it charged at any real high charge rate, I'm ONLY saying it worked. Trouble is excess field current may heat up the fields and/or more curent throught the field control relay. If you like originality or are concerned with the Correct Police STAY WITH A GENERATOR butttttttttt an alternator conversion works better

Just go the expensive way and have your generator
made into an alternator like they do on the antique cars.

So, what's your point?

What caused the problem, and WHY was it a "dumb stunt"?

Simple,if you do something stupid and it injures another person you are libile for damages. If what you do explodes a battery and blinds a person it is a dumb stunt.
